So Gizmodo has this story about how to use an external USB HD with iPad after jailbreaking it. My question is do you always need a mac around to mount and unmount the drive? I want this for vacations to backup photos (one copy on SD cards, and ipad to act as intermediate step to get 2nd copy onto portable HD) Could someone who knows more about this tell me if this is possible.

Thanks...

A quick look at the video suggests that you need a 'split' usb cable so it will connect to the iPad, and macbook (for power source, presumably iPad doesn't have enough power to load it, although the video poster did say that you can connect it to a USB power adapter).

Also he SSHs into his own iPad from his Macbook to mount the drive, although this can be done via the iPad I believe, you can download a SSH client via Cydia (Although im not 100 percent sure about this, but pretty sure that there is one!).

Yeah, if you can - you can unmount/mount it via SSH if you can get an app from Cydia.

I'll be interested in the developments if you do manage to try it, and would love it if anybody has tried it with a 'thumb', 'usb', 'pen' whatever you want to call it drive, instead of an external HDD and does it need the split usb cable or not?

It looks like you do, I'd give it some time. Someone is bound to clean it up and streamline it into an app.... Too much can go wrong when editing plist info..
