When my ipad is flat on my desk/table, the screen defaults to landscape orientation. How do I prevent this without locking the screen?

If I'm reading on my ipad and lay it down, I always have to flip it around a few times when I pick it up, to get the orientation back like it was.

Any ideas? Tried googling but the only thing I find is about locking the screen, but that is not what I want.

My iPad Pro doesn't do what you're describing. If the screen is in portrait orientation, it stays that way even when laying on a table.

Thanks! Hmm, it sounds like there is a setting for default orientation. Will have to google some more, but most hits are related to locking the screen orientation so I have not been able to find a solutlion.

There is no setting for default orientation.
But maybe you can explain again, what exactly is happening. Your iPad screen is in portrait orientation (with screen still on) and then, when you lay it down, it immediately jumps to landscape? Or is it in landscape orientation, the next time you pick it up?

I would bet that your desk actually isn't flat like that, or that how you put it down actually (inadvertently) sort of leans it in a direction that tells it to go into portrait mode; after which it dutifully thinks that's how you meant to lay it down.

I guess the sensor also could be a bit off; if it's a new one you could try to take it to an open Apple store, if there is one.

Strange. It happens a lot to me. I guess it could happen when I put it down and it slightly flip if I hold it by the lower left corner. But getting the orientation back to portrait takes more time. Sometimes I must return to the home screen before returning to the app again.

What does the level function of the measurement app tell you?

Just checked and it says completely flat.

It may be because I hold the ipad in (one of) the lower corners and it slightly tilt when I put it down. When I pick it up again it doesn't return right away and takes a few flips and turns before it is correct :)

Maybe it's in the angle you place the iPad? If it happens to you a lot, may need to be deliberate how you put the iPad down until it becomes muscle memory?

From time to time, it'll be at random orientation if I don't pay attention to how I place the ipad down. Sometimes for (board) games in landscape mode, when I put the iPad down for multiplayer games, it'll rotate 180 degrees. Lol.
