Was looking at maybe upgrading to the M2 iPad, I have the M1 1TB 12.9 pro. I hit the trade in option and they offered me $500 CAD as a trade in towards the new iPad. Seems like a lot of depreciation in value in such a short time. (Same configuration iPad Pro 6th gen costs 2500 CAD new).

Will hold onto it, but maybe its just the way trade ins work in Canada?

Was expecting maybe $500ish dollars for the upgrade not $500 value on a trade in.
Aside the depreciation issue you refer to, I really doubt the upgrade is worth it. It’s a spec bump more than anything. Worth it if coming from an older perhaps pre M1 model, or for a new buyer, but if it was me I would wait until the next release with potentially a smaller process M3, newer screen tech, larger sizes, perhaps a redesign. I think the next would be more of an upgrade than this release was, for an M1 owner.

Very normal, top-specced iPads get proportionally much less with trade-ins (and to some extent also in private sales)
As mentioned but cupcakes, I don't see why you would update now...

Yikes that a Major hit $2,500 down to $500 Canadian in a year. Vs 4 years on my 2018 64GB base 11” iPad Pro get $255 Trade in thats 400% skew adjusted at 4 years. Don’t quote me on that math.

There’s no point upgrading to the M2 if you have the M1. RAM is the same, only a processor bump, they even not bringing the Face ID Camera on landscape. You’ll notice absolutely no difference in speed for everyday use. Even if you game a lot on it it’s not worth $2k just for that.

mate,
here in the US, i got the same deal - 12.9 LTE, 2tb - $500 dollas. i ended up selling it on fleabay because i had , at least to me, a bit more equity in it (apple care+ through january 2024, apple pencil 2, magic keyboard case thingy) and sold it for much more.

i did order the 12.9 LTE 2TB M2 version with pencil and magic keyboard case thingy. should get it wed. paid a bit less because did not add apple care+ as its a complete waste of money in my use case.

I was surprised when Apple offered $415 for my 2021 11" IPP 256. Cash for your mac, my normal go to, offered $370.

Agreed but also a weird thing to consider: there’s rumors (just rumors) that Apple is going to let Mac OS run on iPads and surprise surprise. They’re talking about supporting m2 and above.

I worry just like last time, I’ll buy the discounted one thinking I got a great deal and then bam. Next wwdc announces Mac OS mini on iPad for m2 and I’m over here like…what the hell man. I can never win

They could well be testing it on M2 since it the current version and then restrict it to M3, to only 12.9 devices for a "better experience" or to 16GB RAM devices...
I wouldn't speculate too much at this point, especially as the rumors says that it's only for store apps, not regular MacOS apps, so much less of a revolution people are assuming...

I don't think the trade in value cares much about the higher storage of the device, that could be part of the reason for the low value.

If you play in the high storage realm you should be reselling. I traded in my iPhone but would have sold it somewhere else had it been 1tb.

But then again I don’t see the point unless you have a specific need for it and especially if you upgrade often.

Trade in values have always been really poor especially for brand new items. 3 weeks ago? I got an iPad Pro 11 256GB cellular for $200 off. Apple was offering less than half of what I paid for trade in value, lol.

I had no intention of trading, just curious how much. But yeah it’s quite a dip. Lol.

I look forward to many years of heavy usage with my iPad :D.
