I named my iPhone 3G Smudge and my iPod Touch Blot... but now I'm going to have to name a massive iPad.

While I think about names, are you planning on changing up the default name (Johnny Appleseed's iPad, or whatever) and giving it some personalized style?

Maybe 'Hal' would be a good iPad name?

I've been going with early greek atomist philosophers for the iPods and iPhones:

iPod 3G - Leucippus
iPod 5G - Democritus
iPod 4G nano - Lucretius (not Greek, but of a similar tradition)
iPhone and iPhone 3GS - Epicurus (older iPhone was replaced with the new one)

I figured the iPad would be Socrates, since the iPad marks a new beginning.

Or perhaps I am taking my philosophic tendencies too far...

I had named all my devices after characters from Futurama. However, I could never remember who was Dr. Zoidberg and who was Leela. Now everything is just named what they are - MacBook, iPod Touch, etc.

I have a Star Trek theme going in my Apple ecosystem. Desktops are starships; laptops smaller starships. iPods have been named after Runabouts. My Apple TV is the Defiant. The wireless network is Pathfinder. My iPhone is Communicator. Time Machine backups happen on the Relativity. iPad... hmm. That's sort of an existential question that I have yet to grapple with. Starship or Runabout? Hmm. ;)

(Someone remind me to get a life.)

my MacBook is Macarena (like the song/dance) My tv is Plasmina, but I never thought to name my phone or an iPad.

Interesting...

my macbook air is "airbot"
my ipod is "mediabot"
my iphone is "phonebot"
my ubuntu pc is "ububot"
I would have probably chosen "padbot" for an eventual iPad

Now this is really the important question about the iPad!

I've used characters from William Gibson novels for my naming scheme; so far I've got:-

  • Whitemute/Neuromancer for my Windows/Linux dual boot system.
  • Molly for my Macbook.
  • The Finn for my home server.
  • Rivera for my iPod Classic.
  • Flatline for my iPod Touch.
  • Count Zero for my Nokia 770.

I haven't had any inspiration yet for the iPad :(
