Ipad Digital Copy?

Hi,

There are movies such as King Kong or Lord of the Rings in Blu-Ray that

contain digital copies for the Ipod but since those digital copies are for the

Ipod then I was wondering if the scaling was messed up when using Blu-Ray

digital copy for the Ipad or if the Ipad shows digital copy in all its Blu-Ray

glory without looking like a scaled up Ipod version.

The digital copy that is included with blu rays is not specifically for the iPod. If you load them into iTunes they will work on the iPad just fine, and they look great. I have a ton of them loaded on mine.

Quick question though...I would need a Blu-Ray drive to even get the digital copies onto my computer in the first place?

Just being nit picky here, the DVD actually is made to open up iTunes where you will normally enter a code included w/the Blu-Ray/DVD to download the file via iTunes. I've never actually seen the digital copy of the file actually on the DVD.

Point being, it is the exact same thing you would get if you paid for the download in iTunes.

No, the file actually is on the DVD.... it's just that you have to connect to iTunes to attach the DRM/your account information to the file. That's why the file downloads so quickly.. it's actually transferring off of the DVD to your iTunes library while iTunes adds the DRM/account info to it.

But you are correct that the quality is the same as it is on the iTunes store. Most films are 640x480 (for 4:3 or 16:9 content) with 5.1 sound and some have subtitles, chapter art, etc.

Aren't digital copies huge in terms of file size?

They aren't any larger than any other film you would download from the iTunes store. Most are in the range of 1.25 - 1.75 gigs, I would guess. That's just a rough estimate, but no.. I wouldn't say they are huge considering the quality.
 
Some are on DVDs, but others are just codes you redeem.

My sister got Twilight on Blu--the copy sold at Target included a code for an iTunes digital copy, and she didn't need to insert any DVDs.

Hmm, I've never had one actually be on the DVD. The ones I have purchased always take me to the iTunes Store to redeem and then download.

I know there are some discs that have Windows Media files only as the digital copy.

It's taking you to the iTunes store to enter the code, but all that process does is help to add your account info to the file that is on the DVD.

If all you had to do was go to the iTunes store and enter a code, they'd just put a code in the box for you to redeem on iTunes. The movie file is actually on the DVD in an encrypted format. You put the DVD in, it shows up in iTunes and shows you a page with the movie and a place for you to enter the code. iTunes then copies the file off the DVD and adds it to your library while adding your account info to the DRM.

You both are right. In most of the movies I have, the digital copy is actually on the DVD. In a couple of the newer ones, there is just a download code.

And on some older movies, the digital copy is only compatible with WMP.
 
Hmm...so for one last question :D

Is the digital copy Blu-Ray quality or just DVD quality?

It would seem kind of pointless to buy a Blu-Ray movie only to get a sub-HD digital copy to put on the Ipad :confused:

Actually, the quality of the the SD itunes downloads aren't even up to DVD quality, but they are very close.

The only reason you get the digital copy is so that you can put it on your iPad, ipod, computer etc. It's really just a bonus so you can watch the movie on the go.

I feel your disappointment though, in not being able to get anything near blu-ray quality for digital purchases.

100% not true. The resolution of the ipad is 1024x768 and you will definitely be able to tell the difference, even on the iphone/ipod touch you'll probably be able to see the difference. A lot of people don't realize that the quality of a movie isn't just the detail associated with the resolution, its the artifacts that get introduced in compression that add substantially to the quality.

I was not talking about the difference between HD and the digital copy. I was referring to the differences between the digital copy on your TV versus that same digital copy on an iDevice. The compression is not nearly as noticeable on a 5" screen as it would be on a 50" screen.

Of course there are differences between the HD version and the digital copy. They are just less noticeable on smaller screens than on larger ones. For comparison, I just watched a few scenes from Coraline on my 1080p HD TV and on the iPad and my iPhone. There was a small difference if you look at it very critically, but certainly more than acceptable when you consider the size of the file and the size of the screen it is being viewed on.

No one would expect or demand a digital copy of anything that uses comprerssion to be equal to the original.
 
So if the Blu-Ray digital copy isn't in HD then how do I get HD videos onto my Ipad?

Is the only way being to buy an HD movie off of Itunes? (Would an HD movie even sync in HD to the Ipad or would it be in standard definition?)

If the only way to get HD movies onto an Ipad is through Itunes store then that would suck as they don't have alot of my favorites on there...mainly being King Kong :D

Or are there other ways?

You can download them, or you can rip them from a bluray disk. HD downloads on the iTunes store are fairly limited.

iTunes doesn't re-encode your videos when it syncs, so whatever resolution they are on your computer is the resolution you will get on your iPad.
 
DVD's are encoded at 720x480 quality, and then depending on the resolution, are either squished down to 640x480 for 4:3 content, or stretched out to 853x480 for widescreen content (even videos that are wider than 16:9 are encoded are stretched to a 16:9 aspect ratio because black bars are encoded in the video).

iTunes encodes these videos at 640x480. If the video is 4:3, the video will be displayed in that resolution. If the video is widescreen, it is stretched out to 853x480. If the video is a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the video is encoded at 640x352 (or 640x368... I can't remember) and stretched out. The reason being is that with mp4 video, the black bars are unnecessary like they are on a DVD.

So the videos are close to DVD quality, but not quite. The good news is that you encode the videos yourself and the iPod Classics, iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad all accept DVD resolution of 720x480. I encode fullscreen content to 640x480 because encoding at 720x480 yields minimal quality increase to me, but I encode widescreen content at DVD resolution because the quality in 720x480 vs. 640x352 or 640x480 anamorphic is pretty obvious.

That's funny.
I bought that Blu-Ray when it came out and never opened it.
When I got the pad, I wanted to try it out.
It plays perfectly, with all the info and chapters listed on both my AppleTV and iPad.
In fact, every digital download for iTunes work perfectly.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally select the windows version when you downloaded?
 
If you use a digital copy disc then you lose it can you redownload the movie from iTunes for free?

That's odd, I got the same version of Star Trek and the digital copy works on both my iPhone and iPad.
