iPad Email Question

So, I have a random question about email on the iPad. One of my biggest pet-peeves about email on the iPhone is that it is limited to 200 messages displayed at once. I love being able to recall messages that are quite old on my laptop, but cannot get such an experience easily on the iPhone.

Does the iPad keep more than that displayed on the inbox? I know that might be hard to test on the first day... I'm just curious. Also, is there anyway to transfer old email messages from a MacBook Pro (no longer stored on an email server) to the iPad?

Wow, that's just plain old annoying.

Give me a Mail app that can import all of my saved email messages from my MacBook Pro, display them with ease and easily indexed for quick searching. I will most likely still grab an iPad in a couple of months... but seriously, I was really hoping for a more desktop-like experience when it comes to email.
 
The iPad has limited storage. keeping so many E-Mail on it doesn't seem like a sensible thing to do.

You know you can still search for old messages on the server, right? Adding onto that, there's the Gmail web app, optimized for iPad. Looks pretty good.
 
Yeah, the problem is this:

I've been using University email for three years now. I go to a smaller University, and the storage capacity on the server was 5MB. So, there is nothing sitting on the server, they just download to my iPhone and MBP and stay there locally.

I guess I'm paying for being stupid and no just forwarding all that mail to a gmail account, huh?

Aw well. I have numbers in my gmail address, which I despise. I do have a MobileMe address of firstname.lastname that I could renew. I guess I'm a stickler for a "professional looking" email address.

Hmm... What to do..
