Hello dear MacRumors Community, I want you to help me to make a choice, between the 379€ iPad 8th gen (32GB) and the 650€ iPad Air 4th gen (64GB). And it is not for me, I already have a gorgeous iPad Pro 11”. Is for my mother.

What does she use her current iPad (a 2013 iPad Air 1st gen, on iOS 10) for? She plays some games, mom games, she watches some streaming TV shows and some movies, and YouTube. Oh, and FaceTime and iMessage, of course. 100% media consumption. However, I want her to try apps like Amazon Prime Video or Netflix, but those require iOS 12 or 13.

And yes, before I see THAT message, the 1st gen Air supports iOS 12, but we all know iOS 12 on A7 devices drains a lot of power and her iPad has the original battery (which is at 52% of the original capacity), so updating her iPad could mean sending it to the trash, battery and performance wise. So I’ve been thinking of getting her a new iPad, mainly for her to keep enjoying her games and shows, and to have a better iPad of course. Also the 16GB of storage have always been a problem, she doesn’t record any video or anything like that, but the operating system plus some big games take most of the 16GB. I thought that 32GB would be enough.

But then, the iPad Air looks so much better, has bigger screen (she likes bigger screens as her sight is not as good as mine), better colors, laminated display (which she doesn’t even know what it is)... at nearly double the price. With double the storage, that’s it.

On one hand, I want to get her a lasting machine. Like the iPad she now has, the new one has to last -at least- another 7 years. On the other hand, I honestly think an iPad 8th gen, with a decent A12, should be more than enough for her games and streaming apps. I don’t think she will mind having a non laminated display, but she will need a headphone jack and that’s another point in favor of the base iPad (there are dongles, tho). The Air looks like a darn good deal -for me-, but I understand she doesn’t need as much, and the budget is tight. I could use that money on upgrading any of my other devices.

What bothers me of the base iPad, aside from the non laminated display and the washed out colors, is the crappy facetime camera. It is still the same camera that my mom’s 7 year old iPad Air. And that kinda upsets me. But overall I think it is not worth spending double the amount of money on an Air 4.

Please, keep your focus on those two models. Any 10.5” model (pro or air) is not considered because of the numerous issues this models may and will have eventually on the screen. And even if you think this is not the case for many 10.5” models, I am not interested in them.

Right now I am more inclined towards the base iPad 8th gen, but with the right, convincing arguments I could consider the Air 4 for my mother. Thank you for your help in advance.

If budget is tight and she will only use it for media consumption, I say go with the 8th gen iPad. Even if the display isn't as large as the 10.9" iPad Air, it'll still be bigger than her current 9.7" display.

I do recommend you go with the 128GB option, though. If you want it to last several years you'll need sufficient space for all of her apps AND future iOS updates (which seem to get bigger each year).

I can always wait for some Black Friday deal... but I don’t know, she uses the headphones all the time, and having them plugged into the iPad is very convenient. No headphone jack on Air 4
Can you transition her to TWE or maybe explore the possibility of using a dongle permanently attached to her favourite wired earbuds/ headphones?

Don't cheap out on the woman who brought you into this life... sheesh!

Just kidding.... ? The iPad 8th gen will be a terrific iPad for your mom. Until recently, I've been using the 6th gen iPad (replaced it with the Mini 5). I was a heavy user of the 12.9 iPad Pro and found the 6th gen to be just as capable.

8th Gen will be perfect. Save the money. I have the 7th gen and do what your mother does and then some. My 7th gen handles it all so the 8th gen will be more than enough.

Yeah my only concern was for the inferior quality of the screen (colors and lamination) and the storage of 32GB. But yeah I mostly agree with you.

My wife has the 12.9 iPad Pro and there is a difference in screen quality from my 7th gen. But that does not matter to me. The screen on my 7th gen is still pretty damn good. Especially for what I use it for. If I was designing or drawing the pro would be my choice, but I don't do either.

From a technical specification, the screen quality is inferior, but in practical every day use it is fine. One aspect of being a regular member of MacRumors is being exposed to over-emphasizing the differences in the hardware.

For example, when the Apple Pencil was first introduced, the response was universally positive... but it was only after Apple released the Pencil 2 that many of the same people who lauded the Pencil 1 were complaining that the Pencil 1 was a laggy stuttering mess. ?

Although you’re right with being a regular member and being aware of geeky details that other people won’t notice, in this case I know why I say it: I went to an Apple Store recently just to compare them (and hold the new iPhone 12 in my hands) and side by side the colors of the regular iPad look less vibrant than on the iPad Air 4, and at the same time, the screen of the Air 4 looks less saturated than my iPad Pro one (maybe it lacks the P3 color gamut of the Pros). Which is expectable, on the other side, and something my mom probably won’t notice.

Does she type or need a keyboard to go along with the iPad? At the moment, there's not a whole lot to choose from if you're getting the Air 4. And if you go for the Magic Keyboard, that alone costs about the same as the Gen 8!

My mom's an AirPods convert so not having the headphone jack is a non-issue but not having a home button will require adjusting she wouldn't like. If I let my mom choose between iPad 8th gen and Air 4, she's definitely going to choose the iPad 8th gen (she's on iPhone SE 2020 and doesn't want FaceID).

Of course, when I ask her if she wants a new iPad her reply is her current iPad (Pro 9.7 128GB) does everything she needs it to. She'd prefer if I just gifted her the cash. :p

The iPad 8th gen does just about everything one would want. If your mom primarily uses it for consumption and is not too demanding, she should be completely satisfied with the latest base model. It’s a giant leap in performance, a larger display, has Touch ID and has better storage options than her current iPad. Plus, like you said, it has a stand-alone headphone jack.

Would she appreciate the better screen of the Air? It might just be you projecting your own desires onto hers when it comes to some of the features. Has she ever complained about her front camera, or has she just not yet had the chance to use that? I think most of your boxes are checked just fine with the 8th gen. The price is right and it allows your mom to use everything she would want to use on her iPad.

Oh my god! Your mom and mine are so alike! She says the same, she doesn’t need a new one. Also she uses the home button as well, but she learned the 4 fingers pinch to return to the home screen so she could learn the other gestures.

The thing I’m most afraid of is she is so used to iOS 10 interface, maybe she will have difficult in adapting to the new control centre. But eventually she will.

You’re absolutely right, I am projecting my own desires onto hers, also, maybe she will find a bit more difficult to hold the ipad with no big bezels. She already tries not to touch the screen (and palm rejection doesn’t work that well at least on iOS 10). As far as the front camera is concerned, it is me who notices the bad quality on the FaceTime calls, but I can live with it.

I don’t want to say iPad Air 4 is expensive (for me, it is a bit), but if the price had been the same as the previous Air (550€/499$) I probably would have chosen that one, or at least considered it more heavily. But I don’t expect crazy discounts on recently released hardware, so iPad 8th gen it is.

Thanks to everyone for your advices!

By the way @kazmac @sracer @firedept @rui no onna @Crow_Servo do you think 32GB will be fine? I mean it is a big improvement over 16GB, if the iPadOS alone takes 12GB, you have 15GB or more left for games and streaming apps like Amazon Prime Video HBO or Netflix. I mean, those streaming apps don’t take storage right? They just stream and delete the content as it is downloaded, leaving just a small caché/buffer/pool.

It’s just I see 128GB overkill. a 64GB option would have been great.

I do not know the answer to the steaming app size question, as I generally keep things loaded on our iPads (Air 4 and 7th Gen).

They use a bit more space compared to before (around a couple hundred MB each). However, unless you download videos, 32GB would probably be fine.

My mom likes to view her photo album on the iPad and downloads videos when she goes on vacation overseas so I wouldn't go lower than 128GB for her (internet is iffy and geographic restrictions so cloud/streaming would be a no-go).

I have WiFi (FTTH) everywhere, so no worries in that regard. And if she must spend a night out, I think one or two movies can be stored easily.

64GB would indeed would've been great... which is why Apple doesn't offer that. :)

How much is she using on her 1st gen Air? And is that "stable" usage or does she have to remove games/apps to make room for new ones? That will help determine whether or 32GB will be enough.
