Just picked up a baseline 16GB WiFi only Ipad 2 days ago, and beginning to upload all my work documents onto it. I use mostly Word and PDF files. I've already downloaded and installed Pages, iBooks, and a free app called iPDF.

The problem I have is that I can get Word docs to open up fine, but it seems like the iPad hiccups a lot on bigger PDF files.

i.e., I have a large PDF file that is about 100 pages long, most of which is in xls spreadsheet format, and blueprints of floorplans (schematics). The pages with the spreadsheet loads just fine. Once it gets to the drawings, it chokes. If I try to zoom in, it chokes. If I rotate the iPad, it chokes again. Is there a work-around to this problem? I want to be able to present the file to my coworkers/boss and examine something without embarrasing myself.

2nd question I have is: is the Spotlight the only method of organizing the work documents? Is there no way of, say, creating a folder on the desktop, like my MBP?

Other than that, I'm really happy with my purchase. I don't have to lug around my MBP anymore, instead just whip out the ipad during the commute!

Thanks guys!

Try goodreader. By far the best app for PDF files that I have used.

You can't create folders yet, but I expect that will be available when ios4 for iPad is available.

I would also suggest that you try out iAnnotate PDF and Papers, though neither are free.

I would checkout GoodReader.
Also, I don't know if you are getting these PDFs from emails or from your computer, but I would definitely check out Dropbox as well.

Edit: to clarify, perhaps a good way to organize all these PDFs is to keep them in your Dropbox folder on your MBP, and use the Dropbox app on the iPad. In the app, any file you star will be cached locally on the iPad (so you could view it offline).

Its not a laptop so you can't store documents In 'folders' on your 'desktop'.

You can organise files somewhat in Dropbox though if you want, and as others have suggested Goodreader does a lot.

Within GoodReader you can create a whole hierarchical file system with folders and subfolders. Documents can be uploaded and downloaded via iTunes' file sharing or via cloud services like DropBox, Google Docs, MobileMe, email attachments, etc.

It'll be the best $0.99 you'll ever spend.

Get the air shaing app, you can create and manage folders from your main computer (Mac or pc) and arrange and manage folders on your iPad.

Also drop box and good reader work well as a team of apps.

Thanks for tips! I purchased the goodreeader app and it works like a charm. It still takes a little bit of time to resolve the blueprints, but way better than using iBooks. For work use as a portable, this thing works great. Plus every time I whip it out i feel like I'm on the starship Enterprise!

I'm also a very satisfied goodreader app customer. I love that I can easily transfer files to my MacBook either wirelessly or via drop box.
