I have been given an old generation 2 iPad but it is not charged I went to recharge it but it gets as far as asking me to choose a backup but there is a message on it also saying that there is no backup up to date on it and it won't go any further. Does anyone know how I can advance it to a suitable backup, please? If so id be much obliged

So that iPad 2 has been reset to factory settings, it seems. If you do not have a backup on a computer (via iTunes for example) or in your iCloud, there will be no backup. You could set it up as a new iPad if you wish.

If it asks you for a backup to restore from, there should be a "Back" button or a arrow to the left somewhere. You should be able to choose a setting "Set up as a new iPad" in that process. What happens exactly when you turn it off and on again - do you start with a "Hello" screen or do you see apps after it has started up?

Great, have fun with your iPad 2! I hope it does everything you'll be using it for. :)

I have an iPad Pro myself I usually use but this friend of mine, is hoping to work away, eventually, so asked me if i had any use for it and as my late father used tosay to me, never look a gift horse in the mouth lol, the only thing was it was minus a charger so temporarily I have used the lead for my old iPhone because I don't need it anymore because its wireless charging an I'll have to get a proper charger cos its taking ages to charge

Is it on iOS 9? I hope it isn't unbearably slow. :(

If it’s on iOS 10 it must be the iPad 4. It was the second iPad with Retina display so perhaps the person who gifted it to you got them mixed up.

iPad 2 and 3 are stuck on iOS9, and iPad 4 on iOS 10.

Lovely gift either way - enjoy your iPad.

We still use our iPad Gen 2 (iOS 9) as a media control panel for the TV. It’s a bit slow, but it’s held up well for this type of utility.
