I have a 32GB iPad Air 2 with cellular facility. I have observed that at times while browsing with Google Chrome and reading some lenghty article that the iPad suddenly goes back to the home screen. I have to again start Google, locate the article to continue reading. This is happening even with a very good WiFi connection. Kindly help me to address this issue as these interruptions are very irritating.

It sounds like the app keeps crashing over and over. Do other web browsers work just fine?

Excellent question, OP try another browser, restart your iPad and try again. A reinstall of the app would be your next step. Best success!

I use a workaround sending long articles to iBooks, if this happens on my iPad mini 2 with 1GB ram, your iPad Air 2 have 2GB ram so you could try this in safari. The mini is too good of a reader to scrap so I hold on to it. :)

If I didn’t have my Kindle and it’s lovely old e-Ink display, I’d add an iPad Mini for reading duties where my 12.9 iPP makes itself a little too impractical in some situations.

Anywho...
I remember this situation when I was still rocking an OG iPad Air with its 1GB of memory on iOS 12. Any heavy duty website would crash Safari.

Sounds like you may have a memory hungry article on your hands.
Not necessarily. Having too much stuff using up RAM does the same. The web page itself just may be the catalyst instead of being the actual cause.

I'd normally force close all background apps. If that's not enough then I'd hard reset. That usually solves the issue. If it doesn't, then it's the web page and I usually just go to the PC to view.

Normally, I’d agree, but since upgrading to my iPP, I haven’t needed to “babysit” app load for precious RAM.

If there’s a repeatable issue/crash at hand, I then start taking steps such as yours but not the shotgun approach. I first delete the offending web site data in Safari prefs and cookies just in case there’s something going wonk there.

Most of the time a simple reboot can fix a problem, sure! Sometimes a bit more digging can be done. If it’s a memory issue though, apps force close iirc.

On 2017 iPad Pro (4GB RAM), RAM wasn't much of an issue with iOS 12 but I'm getting crashes again with iPadOS 13.

I know iOS is supposed to terminate background apps in a low memory situation but I don't find it quite as effective as force close/restart.

I have the same model iPP as you (second generation iPP 12.9) and so far on 13.6, I haven't had many crash issues or such. Then again, I don't use Chrome much despite it being installed for compatibility at times but I still get a warning in Safari on the PlayStation site on iPad or Mac (Get with the times Sony!!!!)

I do hope that iPadOS 14 is good to the second gen tho.

I don’t see many crashes on my iPad Pro first gen either. The RAM management of iOS is usually absolutely sufficient, hard resets to me are phone shop approaches to troubleshooting and not needed in most scenarios, hence why they’re not even featured on Apple’s site in the troubleshooting section. They know why.

The betas for iOS 14 runs pretty smooth on my device right now btw. Looking forward to the release version.

I think you have me somewhat misquoted... or have me confused with a previous post.

So.....

I don't "babysit" my iPad and it's memory management as I have little (if any) issues with my second gen iPP. With iPadOS 13, but since Apple is releasing iOS 14 to the same group of devices including those with much less RAM so any improvement in memory management is always a plus.

I’m not claiming you babysit your iPad - I started from the same outset that I don’t have many crashes either. Sorry if my post came across confused.

Switching to Safari seems to have solved the problem. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
