I know many of you were wanting to use your iPads (especially the upcoming 3G version) as a free phone device with your Google Voice numbers, so I wanted to share my findings.

This is the only method I've seen that works without having to use another computer/device to dial out. It also works without having to leave an app open all the time to receive a call.

Link.

OS 4.0 is also going to fully support Skype.

I think some people have gotten Skype working already, although presumably you must leave the app open.

Yeah, it'll be much better in 4.0 since you can leave apps open in the background, but till then this seems like the best method.

Skype does indeed work on the iPad & it works quite well, but it does cost money to get your own Skype number & a monthly fee. And I believe you're right, the app currently has to be left open to receive a call. Not very practical.

The only and the biggest downside of Skype is that it will never (or not any time soon at least) support 3G calling. The feature is exclusive to Verizon phones.

I can use skype via my 3G phone on Sprint no problemo

And about iSip..

Glad that it works but I will wait until fring or nimbuzz fixes their issues, because I do not foresee myself using this that much on the ipad.

if you jb your phone you can use skype voice on 3G ;)

OK, I've got both gizmo5 and google voice accounts.

All the guy does is show that it works. But how does it work? Where are the instructions?

Thanks in advance.

Instructions are in the video description. They're pretty straight forward, but lemme know if you have any trouble.

OK, I'm in my google voice account settings and am having trouble forwarding my gv number to gizmo5 sip. GV says "This phone must be verified before it can be used with your account." So I try to verify the number, but then my iSip iPhone app doesn't ring. How do I verify it? TIA

I've managed to verify the phone. So the gv->gizmo5 forwarding has been set up. Now when I go to Safari on my iPhone and dial a number, it launches the native phone app, whereas in your demo, it launches iSip app. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

You'll prob wanna download the actual Gizmo5 desktop app to your computer & set that up for verification purposes.

BTW, some people I've called or who have called me have said there is sometimes an echo on their end when I don't use a headset. This is probably because the iPad's mic is picking up the speaker as well. So it seems as if the iSip app is just simply allowing the mic to pick up the sound from the speaker. So basically you'll wanna use either a Bluetooth headset or at the very least a basic pair of regular old headphones (while still using the iPad's built in mic).

Hmm, that Im not really sure about since I've only tested this on my iPad (dont have an iPhone here currently to test). But since iSip is a universal app, it should technically behave the same way.

Are you on WiFi at the time or the cell network's data?? If the latter, try moving to WiFi & see what happens.

In gv you must tell it to call gizmo5. If you are on the mobile gv, switch to the desktop version.

What's the direct link to the desktop version? I looked everywhere with no luck.

That's what it looks like on my iPhone:
