Yes, my box fresh iPad have a really strange error. A lot of images wont be displayed correctly. They look like some negative-effect. This is not however all images. Not the icons on the home screen for instance. Playing video from youtube is no problem, but the thumbnails are bad. In my opinion it looks like it is a JPEG issue, since not all images are bad. Looks like .gifs etc are ok, when using safari, but not JPEGs.

The strangest thing is when choosing background in settings. When choosing image, the all look fine. When I return to the homescreen they look bad.

I've tried to restore it with latest software but no luck. Is this a hardware issue?

Try taking a screen shot and seeing if the images are still distorted after that. Press the lock and home button at the same time to take the screen shot. If it is distorted, do a restore and it should be fixed. If the screen shot isn't distorted, then it's most likely a hardware issue.

Yes I did. Tried twice downloading the newest software, and restoring it as a new iPad. Also tried on a different computer/itunes.

The home screen background is fine after restoring. but it will not display correctly if I change it. Looks like everything using jpegs wont work good. Especially google maps in satelite mode. Green land gets a blue color, and the sea is yellow. (In map mode the colors is fine.)

Tried restore it many times now with no luck.
BUT: I tried to take a screenshot. And the photo is also ditorted. However, when saving one of the distorted images in a webpage, they do display correctly ( no distorsion) when viewing it afterwards. In fullscreen that is, thumbnails look not good.

Tried setting up as a new iPad rather than from backup?

If it were mine I'd be back at the store already.

This is most likely due to Google's real-time mapping API which is showing you the current visuals based on the volcanic ash that has taken over foreign airspace.

Kidding.

Try messing with the accessibility options in the preferences maybe it got confused or something. I know there are options in there for low light and black and white and stuff.

Tried that too, but i Wont help. Do anyone know the difference between rendering of JPG's in Safari and Photos? They all work when saved to Photos.

I have tested with syncing the iPad with .jpg images from my mac. They all work fine when viewed in photos. The same happens with .jpg images I save from Safari. This is some strange hardware error if it is. It is capable of displaying .jpg images. However not in Safari or applications. (Other than the Photos application that is)

Even tried a DFU reset today. No good.

I have a very similar problem when i sync photos through itunes.. a handful always come out defunct.. and "corrupted"

On a related note i have a large tif file that when saved is saved as lo res and the pic looks terrible. Does the os auto resize adjust due to spa e avai?
