I worry about heat issues related to the size of the battery in the iPad. What do you think? Will that be an issue?

You might as well worry about every battery there is. iPad is most likely using the same battery technology in the latest MB/P. Which means it'll be fine.
i hate how my macbook heats up. i use a cooling system from logitech that keeps it cool. hopefully my ipad doesnt heat
There have been times when my 3GS has gotten uncomfortably warm. Not as much as an issue when driving since I mount the phone and speak through Bluetooth in my vehicle.
However, heat is a major issue given the higher energy from the larger battery.
I will wait upon checking it out, firsthand before purchasing the 64 GB version.

)If anything this is likely to be the opposite. A larger battery will be less taxed to deliver the same current.
I've used the 13" and 15" 2009 versions unibody MBP's and the battery area, was never really an issue. Don't really ever recall the battery area ever being warm at all. The CPU/GPU area was where the heat would build.
With the iPhone if I stream TV via Slingplayer it will get warm, but not even close to "uncomfortable". With the full aluminum back on the iPad, it should dissipate heat much better than the iPhone with a plastic back.

Here are a few to get you lathered up:
- They could all spontaneously combust.
- The screen could shatter sending shards of glass into my eyes, blinding me.
- The device could cause interference with any PC within a 50 foot radius causing them not to work.

With your examples, you are worse than you think. We are not talking about spontaneous combustion, or blinding you (yet).
Guessing potential defects might be timed well now. Once the device is out, it will be not 'potential', but real defects. I and the starter of the present thread are kind of asking the same or very similar questions.
I have to say that I am almost overwhelmed that you wasted your ninth Macrumors post on me. As a newbie, I should advise you that you should relax a bit. RELAX! Personally, I've had at least a dozen posts before I started patronising others and giving pointless advise.
By the way, I think due to the low-powered Cortex A8 and the large aluminium surface, heat might not be such an issue as we have it on portables and desktops. The battery could, however impose another threat - don't leave it on direct sunlight or in the car!

trust. ichatting while not having my fan connected, will burn so hot. sheesh its crazy thats why i bought the fan! aha. but i keep it cool now so no worries
iStat Pro on 13" MacBook Pro. A few Safari windows and Textedit, yet it occasionally reaches 6000rpm and freaking hot (whatever that is in Fahrenheit).

You just condescendingly told a newbie to relax, while right after asking him why he can't muster up faux anger over a potential issue in the future?
Think of it this way:
The 15" MBP has a 73 watt-hour battery, that can be dissipated over 7 total hours. In other words... it draws about 10W of continuous power.
By contrast, the iPad only has a 25 watt-hour battery that can be dissipated over 10 hours. This is a consumption of about 2.5W of continuous power.
Hence... an iPad consumes about 25% of the power of a MBP... so it follows that it would only generate 1/4 of the heat.

Look at the CPU usage in your own screenshot and then go back to pondering why you aren't getting seven hours out of the battery. Quite frankly, I challenge you to find another computer that would run for an hour or two under that load without needing to be charged.
Are ya really expecting an answer to this question? Wait a month and ask when people actually have devices on their laps.
The speculation and dumb posts are getting old.
Maybe I should start a thread asking if they think the iPad will leak radiation or nuclear waste. Or maybe one asking if they think using this on their lap will reduce their sperm count.

Alumin(i)um back? Going to dissipate any heat easily. There's much more surface area.
If it senses it's getting too hot, it'll back off and in some cases tell you it's stopped till it's cooled down (alal iPhone) i'd imagine.
A non-issue for now.
