Just curious if anyone has run across any good HTML 5 applications that run well on the iPad. Aside from simple, no frills video serving, the only thing I've seen so far that was interactive and functioned properly (for the most part) was Google's Pac Man.

In many of the examples I've tried, they simply don't function properly. More commonly, Safari seems to interpret my interactions as a desire to scroll the page. Am I missing something? Given that HTML 5 and the related technologies are touted as making lack of iPad/iPhone flash irrelevant I would like to think there are at least a few examples out there that show this off. (Mind you, I'm not talking about video. At no point has an Apple representative given the impression that they're just talking about Flash as a video streamer) There has to be something cool out there to play with.

What have you all come across?

Web page with a bunch of HTML5 sites:
http://www.apple.com/ipad/ready-for-ipad/

For the most part those are just showing examples of video embedding and image transitions. I was more curious about examples of rich interactivity. I've seen some that work well on my Macs Safari, but only one (Pacman) that works on the iPad.

As with anything, the site has to be built with the usage in mind - most HTML5 stuff up until now will have been developed for Safari running on a desktop. Give it a bit more time before these and other sites are "iPad/iPhone" compatible.

HTML5 is just a set of new HTML standards. Those are just HTML sites with maybe a couple of the new instruction sets.

HTML5 is not some magical programming language.

Yeah this is what people don't understand.

HTML5 is just a set of agreed upon standards for upgrades and improvements for HTML. As browsers implement individual pieces of them and ultimately offer compliance at some point, you will see more benefits from them.

However, as you note, HTML5 is not some magical programming language that people set out to do something in. It is HTML. HTML5 just offers some new abilities and improvements for developers and web site designers to potentially use over time.

It is like when the iPhone OS is upgraded. Not every app is automagically upgraded to use the latest code base. And for HTML it is more involved than that because implementation first has to be done by the web browser developers before the actual web developers can do it.

It is not like you can have a plug-in that magically implements all of HTML5 and have someone coding for it. It is not how it works.

That spark site was pretty cool. Had to remind myself that it wasn't an app! I think there is a lot of creative possibility for other sites in the future based on how smooth that website handled multitouch.

You probably already know about this one, but I'm pretty sure that Gmail for iPad is HTML5. It makes use of scrolling independent from page panning/scrolling.
