When I open iPhoto with my iPad connected to USB, the iPad shows up on the left in the list, but if I click on it no pictures show up on the right, and the only thing I can do with it is 'unmount' it. Is this the expected behavior, or am I doing something wrong??

If you are expecting to see what photos that are on your iPad in iPhoto, then it will not happen that way? If you want to move photos to your iPad you need to do it through iTunes under the Photos Folder. Choose iPhoto option. Then go from there.
