iPad instead of Apple TV

I love myTV, but ... if I get netflix, abc player, (Hulu May 24th?), Pandora, Air Video, rss readers galore. I could get rid of my Tivo box and my
Personally, I could not see me giving up my Apple TV because of the iPad. I think they are designed for two drastically different environments and purposes.
Just my two cents.
I agree, but I figure why not try. At least I'll have an extra cable for when I want to watch my iPad via the TV in a hotel room.
I have never used my Tv eever since i bought the thing back last summer. I dont its just tooo restrictive, i know u can hack it but still. Thats why i went with a mac mini and use it as a HTPC, works alot better for me.

Been there done that. Did the PS3 with TVersity media server on a 64-bit Win 7 PC/Server.
The Apple TV has been the only device to consistently work with my ALAC and WAV audio files. The PS3 was a total flop for me as a media hub.
BTW, I use my Mac Mini as my iTunes hub.
I prefer the iPod environment (look and feel) of the Apple TV versus some of the options I have seen with the Mac Mini as an HTPC.
I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 6 month old, and being able to come home and call up any of the kids movies on the Apple TV, no discs, is the best. I've pretty much stopped buying DVDs and just get movies from iTunes. When the kids get a bit older I will most likely get another Apple TV for the basement so they can watch movies down there.
or that too, but i prefer Mac Mini over anything else since i have alot of AVI based media.
It would be nice if I could run "APPS" on my TV. Was just thinking about this last night. Boxee will do tho.

Why on earth would you even consider this? Unless you only have a 10" tv then I guess it makes sense. However I'll stick with my Tv and my 58" plasma.

In fact, I have spent many nights converting my DVD collection so that I can have everything on my hard drive and running through iTunes.
I currently use my old iBook as my media hub, waiting to get a MacMini, just have other bills/responsibilities that come first.
An iPad is designed for more casual viewing of things when you don't want to sit in front of a large tv, yet Apple TV is designed specifically to be used on a tv screen. They aren't really comparable, unless you are using your ipad to hook it up to your tv, which is only possible through the VGA adapter, and I'm not sure how good of quality video you are going to get out of that.
I would love someway to beam the video from your iPad directly to your tv, maybe through wifi somehow, if future tv's would support such a technology. That would be even easier than using the vga adapter, or any other corded type system.

What happens when you want to idley watch TV while checking your e-mails on the iPad? You're pretty much screwed right there.
I agree with others who say they are designed for very different things but should your personal usage surfice with an iPad for your media usage then so be it. Obviously others are saying they have it for the kids so they can view movies but this guy may not have kids or want to use it in such depth.
Put it this way, it can certainly be used as the OP has suggested to some extent but not fully.

No way would I ditch my Apple TV. Between it, my Roku Box, an HDTV, an antenna, and Netflix and MLB.tv subscriptions, we haven't needed to buy cable TV in several years.

I'll be using my iPad in the bedroom hooked up to my tv using my component cable and stream via Air Video, like I do now with my iPhone, instead of a second ATV (I have one in the living room). The quality is actually pretty good and the sound is fed to the TV too, unlike the VGA cable.

I wish I could get there. But I watch too much live sports, and quite a bit of it is not OTA, cable/satellite only.
Blackouts suck!
I'd gladly pay money just for streaming off NESN, but I think their contract with MLB prevents it, the killer is I keep getting emails to sign up for MLB.tv!!!
