According to this article.

Apple is telling marketers that the device considered most promising for advertisers -- the iPad -- won't be on the iAd platform until November.

Hopefully this is good news for us that it's just not a port of 4.0 and we will see some unique stuff on the iPad.

Any ideas what it could be? And if itsp turns out to be the same as the iPhone will you be annoyed? I

I don't think it'll be anything more than what's included for the iPhone and no I won't be disappointed.

From what I've read, it would've taken longer to have 4.0 on the iPad, as the iPad team and iOS 4 teams weren't really "working together" at that point.

I've also read that it will actually be iOS 4.1 that comes to the iPad, and finally unifies all of Apple's iOS devices - perhaps, even, the Apple TV, which would explain the long time-gap between now and November. We can only hope for printing and other much-needed features that will let us ditch our notebooks for iDevices.

I just don't get why my new iPhone 4 has iOS 4.0 and gets all the cool features (multitask, threaded emails and unified inbox) in a (cost to me) $299 device yet my really expensive $830 64gb 3G iPad released a couple months ago has to wait FIVE MONTHS?!? to get the same OS update?

I mean, christ, if the iPad was 2 years old I'd understand, but it is the SAME ARCHITECTURE!!!! What is the freaking holdup?!?

Well, considering they have put both 10.6 and 10.7 on the backburner to focus on iOS before, I would imagine it really is as simple as not enough manpower. The iPad's version of iOS is quite different from the iPhone's. Granted, it's not as big as a difference as between iOS and OS X, but still large enough that it's not as simple as just programming something once and worrying about screen size.

My guess is the iPad design was finalized late fall of last year and hence was a fork of the current OS at the time.

Because the iPad OS is a fork of OS 3 it is going to take some time to unify the UI hardware specific build.

As I said above, November is iAd deployment, NOT iOS4 deployment. iOS4 features should be deployed much sooner than November, possible by the end of summer.

Once the initial roll out of iOS4 on iPad is done, then they will focus on releasing the enhancements like online gaming and iAd etc.

A telling sign that this is indeed the case is fact that Apple hasn't released a new version of the iPad OS since it was released. This leads me to believe that Apple will release a version of iOS for iPad sooner rather than later.

Finally, unifying the iPad 3.3 and iPhone IOS4 is NOT and easy task to do well and I'd rather Apple wait and do things right rather than do it half arsed.

Totally agree here. Take the time to get it right. If it gets rushed and has bugs galore then those that complain about it taking so long will be the ones complaining why there are so many bugs. Take as much time as you need Apple to do it right.

Kind of bummed because I thought it was September with a chance to get it earlier.
I don't mind the iPad OS as it is but folders, unified email, more then one exchange account would be nice.
Oh, and multitasking also.
