iPad = iPhone killer?

Hi guys,

For a while now we have been talking about what will be the "iPhone killer" phone to be released. Taking a look at the HTC desire it certainly looks pretty amazing, better screen, less restrictions, better battery life, faster processor, removable battery, expandable memory, flash, better camera, the list goes on and on. I am certainly impressed but I've had an iPhone since day one and I LOVE it. However, with the release of the iPad I can keep everything I love about the iPhone, the OS, the apps, iTunes store etc. yet have a different phone to the iPhone as well.

So, have Apple shot themselves in the foot by releasing the iPad? I know I am certainly considering getting the HTC desire as my next phone and Apple will have to do something pretty special with the iPhone in June to get me to consider it. Front facing camera and 4.0 software for a premium price is not going to be enough I don't think.
 
Very doubtful. I got this after getting rid of my iPhone, but I was gonna do that even before iPad came out. I expect most people interested in iPhone would not see this as a killer/replacement.
 
If I am a data point, no. My iPad will not be replacing my iPhone and I'm looking forward to replacing my 3GS in November. Incidentally I just bought a new MBP a week after I bought my iPad, and I don't think the iPad will be replacing that product either.
 
It's funny. Where I used to never have my iPhone more than a few inches from me I now find myself leaving it behind. I truly do feel the iPad replaces the iPhone in my house but it certainly doesn't replace it 100%.
 
For me, I was planning on getting a smartphone of some sort this year, but when the iPad was announced my interest plummeted to zero. This fits my needs far more than a smartphone - I need document reading and mobile internet. I rarely use my archaic cellphone and never text message or twitter or other mini-internet functions (the sort of "get in and get out" in a minute or so tasks that a smartphone lends itself to very well).

So, yeah, the iPad has utterly killed my interest in a smartphone.

However, I am quite sure that I am in the minority. Everyone I know uses their cell far more often and for many more functions than I do. But I have always been intentionally behind the curve on pager/cellphone/contact-me-anywhere technology.

So, in my opinion, any drop in iPhone sales from people like me will be trivial. Plus, it might even be small enough to be entirely counterbalanced by the people who will buy an iPad and from that introduction to Apple go on to be new iPhone customers.

Plus, again, just in my case, I was undecided between an iPhone and a Droid (or other android phone). So there's a good chance that Apple actually pulled a sale from a rival instead by enticing me with an iPad.
 
I have not decided yet. I'm still waiting on my 3G to arrive today.

If the iPad 3G works as I imagine, I don't think I'll have much use for the iPhone beyond making calls and maybe using it as an in-car GPS.

Almost all of the things that I need my iPhone for (portable email/web/etc) are better suited to the larger screen of the iPad. Sure I have a netbook, but that behemoth is just to heavy to lug around, and who wants to wait for the damn thing to boot up every time I want to shoot off an email.

Time will tell, but I suspect that iPhone may be going on ebay.

Of course now I'll need to carry my Maxpedition Man-purse with me everywhere.

I actually think they are a great compliment to one another.

It will be far harder to "play" on an iPad during a training session or meeting or something.

SO, size-wise, I think they both have their time and place.

As for the next gen smartphone. I played with a Tilt 2 recently and thought it was too big, heavy, and awkward. I like the size and weight of my iPhone. Granted, I have not relaly played with many of the current gen smartphones since I am almost a year away from any sort of upgrade, but it may take a lot to sway me from an iPhone, especially now that I have an iPad.
 
I understand the OP a bit though. I have an iphone, and I tether to it as well, but at&t sucks. lets face it. Now with the ipad I can have the software/hardware that I love, and switch to the verizon network and get a phone that is not quite up to par with the iphone but with tethering, I have the best of both worlds.

I dont think its an iphone killer by any means, but it does raise an eyebrow about ME keeing MY iphone.
 
This is a valid argument. I was OBSESSED with my iPhone before getting my iPad. Now I don't even wanna touch my iPhone other then to text. Whenever I have to surf the web on it I get frustrated now cause the screen is too small. However I'm a new gadget junky so say if the iPad came out in like jan and the new iPhone didn't come out till like July I might be tempted to get something else now where I'd never even consider it before the iPad. But since the new iPhone is right around the corner it'll suck me back in
 
Initially I'd planned on replacing my iphone with the Ipad when my contract expires next year but I'd like an ereader now so I'm getting the Ipad now. and it would be interesting to see how I'd put them to use.
one caveat is that I'm a backpacker, but with most of the books going into the ipad I don't know how i'd carry my supersized Ipod touch.

The iphone is certainly used less for browsing (not at all when im near my iPad) however I dont intend taking my iPad to work etc hence iPhone gets used during the day until I come home.

I will prob now hardly use the iPhone for gaming however since apps are becoming universal its always handy to have that option. I wouldnt want to go to another phone and have to buy two sets of apps!!

Yeah that's my thought as well...my phone typically is my internet device for twitter, fbook, etc, but with an iPad this won't be the case.
 
The iPhone will remain as the ultra-portable all-in-one device. The iPad is too large to replace it, you can't do anything discreetly with an iPad. When its out, people KNOW you are using it. With my iPhone, I can cup my hands around it and shield what I'm doing without being so obvious. That and its still my phone.

Don't worry, the novelty will fade.
 
I think I'm gonna go back to a jailbroken or EDGE-disabled iPhone 2G to go along with my iPad 3G. I think it's the perfect combination.

If I need to play a game that requires a fast processor, or use a GPS or compass, I'll play on the iPad 3G.

If I need to send/receive SMS, take a photo, or if I'm at a Wi-Fi hotspot, I'll whip out the iPhone 2G.

No need to pay The Man double for data, and I think I'll be alright with this setup.

So.... anyone have a 2G they want to sell?
