The video resolution seems to be a fixed value to facilitate pixel jockeys.

iPhone 3GS

480x320 pixel
163 ppi
3.5" diagonal
4.5 x 2.4" case

iPad

1024x768 pixel
132 ppi
9.7" diagonal
9.56 x 7.47" case

So therefore assuming the new iPad resolution has legs through 3-4 revs and 1-2 companion products, this is one possibility:

iPad midi (hypothetical)

1024x768 pixel
163 ppi (1/0.81 scale)
7.85" diagonal
6.5 x 5.0" case (0.67 scale)

Lets call it iPad for improved portability and kids.

Common resolutions to keep in mind.

480p 720x480
576p 720x576
720p 1280x720 (HDTV) (WXGA)
1080p 1920x1080 (HDTV)

1024x768 (XGA) (extended graphics array) (most popular of the moment BTW at 36% of internet users) (4:3)

So this resolution is on the bottom end or below the bottom end for "video" and is a compromise for video for the moment.
