I don't understand why Apple is even trying to promote and develop this product. The iPad is NOTHING new. It's just an oversized ipod touch or iphone, as, i'm sure, has already been mentioned before

I like apple, have a macbook pro and itouch, but this is just ridiculous. I honestly hope it fails because, really, its pointless.

A computer with a digital keyboard just doesn't work. If you can't feel the keys you can't type accurately. beyond that... just get an itouch/iphone. Its much more portable.

Further, it doesn't have much processing power, very little HDD space, AND it doesn't run OS X. wtf.

My macbook pro (09 year, unibody aluminum, 2.26Ghz, 4gig DDR3, 150g HDD) is pretty damn lightweight (with a little extra with a rubberized hardcase attached to it), and I have a full keyboard and full capabilities with running any os x program (and then some) that i want, with the possibility of using another OS as well.

In terms of touch interface, well, the trackpad on the MBP works perfectly, with commands for one, two, three and four fingers. What more do you need?

For a budget kind of a deal, yeah, I guess an iPad (lame name, too) would be.. ok... But for that price, I hate to say it, get a cheap netbook or something running that crappy OS that microsoft keeps pushing.

I mean, 16Gigs of HDD space, WITH wifi (Why would they even put out a product without that included??), is pushing 600$. Once you get into the practical storage space, you hit the 800$+ mark(That's already pretty much the price of a macbook...).... Money pit, IMO.

When it can toast pictures into my bread and make a perfect latté, i'll consider buying one.

16 GB with Wifi is $500

http://www.apple.com/ipad/pricing/ tells you that it has WiFi included in every model, and the model you alluded to costs 499USD.

But please, get in line and join the other dozens of threads that all praise the hate of this new device.

Welcome in 2001, and 2007.

Apple made the iPad because so many people love their iPhones, iTouches and just wished there was a bigger screen model, like me.

I said this for two years, "I wish it was bigger". Many other people would love to surf the web, listen to music, read books on something easy and affordable.

I really don't understand why people can't get this.... it's simple. It's not a computer, it does not do EVERYTHING, and it doesn't have to. It meets not everyone's needs but millions will buy it. For the other's who want all the other "computer" type features they make Macbooks.....

Edited to add- I love the touch keyboard but cannot stand a track pad.

I don't know but it sound like to me that you are jealous. You all ready have the iPod touch and something came out that is better. The iPad addresses the main problems with iPod touch. Although, it is not as portable, it has a beautiful large screen and 10 hours or battery life! And it has the option of contract free 3G if you want it. I'm not sure, maybe it's not for you or maybe your not jealous, but it sure sounds like it to me .

Alright, i misread that in haste :s

since when does it have an HDD?? I believe you'll find it contains flash memory... :)
yeahhh... meant the term loosely for "storage." :p however inaccurate it is

I love my ipod all the same. It does exactly what I bought it for: it's a portable media player that I use in my car, riding the train, and walking to classes.
As for 3G (Which, i now know is the extra$$$ part of the deal that I mistakingly hinted at earlier) i just got a new phone with a non-contractual 3G signal on it. I never use it, but if I need to, i have it wherever.

"Over sized"? Some people just can't see the obvious. They'll sell millions of these plus content for it. Plus bring more people into the Apple ecosystem. Don't like it? Don't buy it.

You're awesome OP. I hope that you fail at your future endeavors as well.

Who wishes for failure?

"Success is boring. Success is proving that you can do something that you already know you can do, or doing something correctly the first time, which can often be a problematical victory. First-time success is usually a fluke. First-time failure, by contrast, is expected; it is the natural order of things.

Failure is how we learn. ..."

not implying this is a first failure for Apple, however.

I think you should use it before you say stuff like that. Apple is selling the iPad as an experience.

If you haven't used one, you probably can't judge it. Just saying!

Nobody HOPES for Failure. The quote above does not represent any argument for hoping someone fails, it is an explanation of why its not always bad. There is a difference.

Well said. I agree that there is definitely a place for this in the market.

Laptop replacement it is not, but it is not designed to be.

Does it entertain everyone else that the people who bitch about this device can't even seem to get the basic specs right?

How can you hate it? You don't even know what it is!

While I agree 100%, people here (including myself) are in some degree "tech geek/nerds" otherwise they wouldn't be freaking about the iPad at all.

Clearly we represent a very small percentage of Apple customer base, so while some delusional people may think we represent their "target" audience, they couldn't be farther from the truth. Apple doesn't want to cut into it's MBP offerings with the iPad, it's looking for NEW customers, and ADDITIONAL SALES to people like me that love the iPhone but wish it had a larger screen for video, email, web etc... Portability is not everyones number one reason for buying a device. The user experience is what is so cool about the iPhone/iPod Touch, playing music or video on it is not what hooks people into buying one, it's how you interact.

Some will never get it, and that's cool, the rest of us will enjoy it for what it is.

Slingbox app, watching TV 3.5" or 10" screen while at my office... mmm gee I don't know :D

Many people say, "the iPad is just a big iPod Touch".

Yes, it is, and that is the beauty of it. Many people may not see it now, but the possibility of the third party apps are endless. With the small screen on the iPhone, so many amazing apps were and still are being created. With the larger screen and faster processor, the iPad will have many great apps that will make it.

The iPad represents a new category of device, any will go after the netbook market. So it's not a full fledged OS, but what do you usually do on the netbook? Word/excel/ppt, Web browsing, etc., all these can be done in such a simple and intuitive way on the iPad. It may be no macbook replacement, but it is an excellent secondary device. I for one will be taking my iPad to school, and travelling, being so much lighter and easier to handle than my current macbook.
