I was charging my iPad today and when it got to around 81% charged, charging stopped and the text "Not Charging" was displayed next to the battery icon. I am charging via a power outlet.

Why does charging stop? Does the iPad not want me to charge it to 100% or what? I'm tired of having to re-plugin the charger to get it to continue charging.

Hace you tried rebooting the iPad?

Why does it do that???

Just rebooted. I'll see if the issue persists.

Nope. Status went back to "Not Charging" like half a minute ago.
Weird how I did not have this problem charging from 11% to 80%.

It could be one of the cells is damaged. I'd call Apple for sure. Do you have an Apple store near you?

Yeah getting to a store shouldn't be a problem. I'm just not sure how I would reproduce this problem in front of the Apple employees since it seems to happen randomly.

Well, charge it to the max and take it in. They can either take your word for it, test it, or you guys can hang out at the Genius bar while your iPad is charging and you get the error message. In any case you should walk out of that store with a new The New iPad.... :D

Take a video with your phone just in case you can't reproduce it at the store and try to include a 'date/time stamp' of this occurrence.

This happened to me with a 3rd party cable with the stock power brick. Once I started using the stock cable it started working fine. The cable works fine with iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

If you don't use the power cord and charger that came with the iPad it won't fully charge. I tried charging mine overnight with my iPad 2 cord and charger and it would only charge to around 80%.

^^

Yup, I had the same problem my first time charging with a 6 ft. cable that I bought off ebay which I use to charge my iphone. It would charge until 60% and then give the same "Not Charging" message. The stock cable works flawlessly for some reason (lower gauge wire maybe?)

It's a shame, cause I'd like to use the 6 ft. cable so I can comfortably charge while using the ipad in bed.

That's not always the case. I have yet to use my iPad 3rd gen charger or cable. I have a 6' foot eBay cable with the iPad 2nd gen charger which is fully charging my iPad 3rd gen.

Also check to make sure the cable is fully seated in the dock connector on the iPad. I've seen a few cases where the cable appears to be fully seated, but is just loose enough to stop it from charging.

Im using the usb and power brick from the first gen ipad and it charges to 100% no problem!

Same problem and more here. :(

1% to 82% took 13hrs, then it became "NOT CHARGING"

unplugged-plugged it back.

82% to 87% took another 3hrs, then it became "NOT CHARGING"

unplugged-plugged it back.

87% to 96% took another XXhrs (i didn't time that), then it was showing"NOT CHARGING" again.

I started using it, whole day it stayed at 96% 2 days later it was showing 89%.

I'll try to go to apple store.

BTW, do I need any reservation to exchange my ipad?

Any updates? Did you end up replacing the iPad or the Genius bar has solved your problem some how?

I have a similar issue. My new iPad charges to around 80+% and then it shows "Not charging". However, if I turn off the iPad and let it charge overnight, the iPad can be charged to 100%. Note I use a longer cable that I bought from Monoprice and I use it with the Apple supplied iPad charger. Besides, the cable works fine for my all iPhones and iPad 1.

Maybe you guys are getting throttled by your electricity provider a la Att style ;)

Nothing's been posted on this thread since April so maybe it's gone stale but....I just got my iPad 3G a few weeks ago and it's been doing this from time to time from the beginning. Mostly it charges up to 96% but tonight it's stopped at 88%. Except for knew time, rebooting fixes it. I think a phone call to Apple is appropriate.

I'm having the same problem with my iPad Pro tried different chargers and cables

Yes I've rebooted the iPad

This happens to me occasionally. Leave the power adapter plugged in and...
1) Unplug the Lightning end from your device.
2) Then unplug the USB end from the adapter.
3) Put the USB end back into the adapter.
4) Then plug the Lighting end back into your device.

Had problem with 3rd party lightening cable and walmart power charger... went with stock cable and charger my headache was gone.

I use a 6ft mono price cable and an Anker four port charger. Sometimes when I plug in the iPad it does not start charging. No message, just nothing. Leaving the iPad plugged in I pull the charger from the wall and reinsert it. This never fails to start it charging.
