So, I'll be playing a game or two (switching back and forth) and have to step away for a few minutes or hours. When I come back and unlock the iPad, both games are closed and have to restart. This happens no matter if I hit the power button before I walk away or if I let it shut down on it's own. Doesn't happen every single time, but at least twice a day.

Have tried restarting and deleting/reinstalling games. Please tell me what to do to fix it as it's driving me batty.

It depends on the type of game you’re playing.

Ps. The amount of free space on the iPad doesn’t matter at all in such situations. It’s more about the amount of memory available to the games that matter.

Also internet speed only matters if the game actively uses it while you’re playing it.

What iPad model? Is it a Pro with at least 4GB? Also, have you tried ensuring all other apps are (force) closed apart from those two games?

Unfortunately, there's really not much you can do with iOS's memory management.
