Bit of an annoying one this. Checked a bunch of threads online as to what the issue may be and can't find a fix.

Running a 2014 iMac and just picked up an iPad 3 (this issue was happening with previous iPad 2 also).

When the device is connected to the Mac via USB it keeps connecting and disconnecting at a rate of about once every half second.
Because of this I can no longer sync, back-up etc.

• USB ports are working just fine as evidenced by iPhone 6s and other peripherals which connect fine.
• There is no VM software on my Mac to conflict with.
• Tried restarting countless times, different cables (all official), switching off Push and many other 'fixes' I found online.

Of note - with my old iPad 2 that shared the same problem - I managed to get it connecting quite randomly to my gf's PC laptop.
But there MUST be a solution to this surely?

Hoping someone might be able to shed some light on this issue!

Thanks in advance,

Dave

It is indeed almost certain to be an issue with the cable. Even if it works with other devices (eg a regular charger), third-party leads in particular tend to mess up in this way with certain hardware combinations.

At my office we just unpacked 6 new iPads. The official cables that came with the iPads cause the connecting and disconnecting issue. I have one cable that came with an iPad that I have been using for about 8 months now that works consistently. We have had to use the one older cable to configure all of the new iPads. It would seem that apple has sent out a huge batch of inferior cables.

[doublepost=1482960737][/doublepost]Apparently if the iPad has very little charge - it cannot pull enough power quickly enough through the cable - so it disconnects. If you charge your iPad a bit before connecting that can solve it.

I guess OP solved his issues 1 1/2 years after his initial post...

I had this same or similar issue with a 2015 Macbook Air and an iPad Air. Apple replaced the iPad on the theory that it was the connector (the port was still good for charging the iPad, so they figured one of the connectors used for data was failing).

No sooner did I leave the store that the problem happened again ...

So, thanks to a broad search, I found this solution which worked for me:

On the iPad tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. This will reset your location and privacy settings and require you to set up a trust relationship with the PC/laptop again.

But if you are running out of options ... try that and see if it works. I realize this thread is older, but posting this solution here in case it helps other people.

Worked like a charm. Thanks so much!

Awesome - had this issue for the past year with an SE, just upgraded to an 8 and it's still there. Your suggestion fixed it!

Worked for like 3-4 days, now it even doesn‘t help resetting the settings... kinda disappointing. That stuff never happened in the last 3-4 years not with my ipad or every ipad used in the company and suddenly in 2017 strange Errors like this appear out of nowhere lol I guess that‘s just the downward cycle Apple‘s slowly going.

Just fixed the issue here at the apple store. Create another account on your mac thus creating a separate iTunes. Backup to that. Then delete backup in original account. Backup again.

It is because the original backup is corrupt.

So many thanks! I was 1 inch away from giving up on one of my best cables.

This is a very common issue with Apple devices. I often face this issue with my iPhone 7 and iPod Touch. Though changing your charging cable or the charging brick itself is an easy solution, I found some basic troubleshooting methods that should help you to fix this charging issue here: Fix iPhone/iPad/iPad charging issues.

Basic port cleaning and dirt removal help me most of the times. Plus, clean your charging cable's lightning connector for rust or dirt deposition. An imperfect connection between your device and the cable usually causes this issue.

Hi,

My iPhone 6s plus keeps disconnecting and reconnecting when plugged into my Macbook Pro. This only started happening this year, and I assume it has something to do with an OS update. Believe me when I say, i have used a multitude of different cables. They all work fine with the wall charger and other Macs and PCs, and some are better when connecting to the Macbook Pro some worse, but this never goes in pair with their price and results are inconsisten. It is not an issue of cable quality, and in the meantime I confirmed it is not an issue of the iPhone port itself. I performed extensive troubleshooting, wiping the entire iPhone etc. Nothing helped.

I did my fair share of research and found out a solution. Although this might slow down connectivity with the iPhone, I did not experience any issues so far, but that does not mean the above procedure is completely safe. Do the following at your own risk, and after making absolutely sure you exhausted all other options (check other cable, check with other machine, check updates, reset location and privacy etc.). The process is reversible if needed (just switch unload to load, and disable to enable)

Here is what worked for me.
1. I noticed that when I manually kill the usbd process from Activity Monitor I was able to get a stable connection. Unfortunately after replugging, I needed to kill the process again. This was a PAIN, since if you did not time it right, the iPhone would connect again, restarting the process altogether.

2. To permanently remove the process from loading you need to run the following in the terminal:
launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.usbd.plist

3. If you get the System Integrity error message, then reboot into recovery mode (Command + R on boot), open the terminal and run:
csrutil disable
Then start the machine and run the command from point 2 again.

Hope this helps.
