I created this thread to ask if anyone has tried the Maxim app that just hit the App Store. You previously could download Maxim through Zinio, but now it appears they have an app.

We are still waiting for Sports Illustrated and Wired which are highly anticipated.

Anyway, I decided that a semi-official magazine review thread might be in order, even though I do not have a review of one ready yet. Let's try to stay away from critique of the magazine itself, and focus more on the qualities of the iPad magazine in terms of UI, interactivity, execution, etc. You know what I'm getting at.

Anyone want to start?

Popular Science

I love the variety of magazines available on Zinio, but they are basically just scanned copies of the newsstand versions.

My vote for the best implementation of UI so far is Popular Science. That magazine blew my mind. I have read it three times. I love the way that the article is presented as a series of overlays that sit on top of the background pictures. I also love the fact that some pictures have multiple overlays to explain them in greater detail. I literally feel like I have traveled into the future with this application. My only criticism is that I have to wait 3 weeks for the next issue!

If Sports Illustrated and Wired are half as good as Popular Science, then we are in for a real treat.

Friend of mine had the PopSci one, was checking it out last night, pretty impressive.

God I cannot WAIT to read fashion magazines on the iPad, I wonder if there are any available yet...

Zinio has an iPad app now. They have Elle, Brazar, Esquire, Blackbook and Maxim. I'm using it right now. I also think it's more than just scanned magazines. They have a text option that makes the article you're reading into text to make it easier to read. I really like it so far. I used to use it for my iPhone but this is much better.

That's great - thanks :)
