Memory?

You mean storage space?

It depends on the format and resolution and so on.

I have an 8 minute video in 480p resolution and H.264 format that takes up 215mb...

Yes, I mean storage. Curious what a two hour movie (ie, any movie you might rent from Blockbuster) in standard definition ripped to an iPad would take up in storgae space. Thanks again!

I ripped a DVD and it put it in "Protected MPEG-4" format. I still don't know what the protected part means, but it seems to take up a tad more space.

The movie is 1:48 long and in 464 resolution in H.264. It takes up 1.44gb and looks like DVD quality!

For some reason, I feel like the 720p movies on iTunes are smaller than 1gb per movie.

if the resolution is set to 480 or something similar it would take between 1GB and 2GB, 720p movies take around 4GB.

I use mac the ripper then Handbrake to rip and encode my DVD's if i want to watch them on the go.

The rip takes up a bit of space but once encoded you can delete the DVD folder.

The beauty of handbrake is you can choose what size you want the file. I do that for my iphone cause havn't got an iPad yet : (

That way you make movies where res isn't too important smaller (IE Legion) and movies will good visuals bigger (ie Avatar).

It depends on many factors

I encode my DVDs to quite high quality and typical two hour movies ripped at 640x480 anamorphic and 1.5Mbps H.264 (decent quality on my Apple TV and plays on my iPod 5G) works out at about 1.5GB for a two hour movie. 720p HD encodes from BD or HD DVD are significantly bigger with them pushing 6GB at 5Mbps.

It is possible to drop the resolution of the encode significantly and drop the size as a result. I do two pass encodes for my PSP at 480x272 at 460Kbps and that works out at 422MB. They look fine on the PSP but are pretty blocky when it gets busy on my laptop. A higher bit rate (say 600Kbps) would do wonders but I like to keep my PSP encodes down around 400MB per film due to the very limited space on the memory stick.

For good watchable rips for the iPad you're probably fine dropping the resolution to 512x384 (for 4:3 material so about 300 for 16:9) and keeping the bit rate around 700Kbps. That should bring the 2 hour movie in at around 700MB.
