iPad mini Ipad Mini 2 help restore

Hi, I know how sketchy this sounds but just hear me out.. I was helping my dad clean his place the other day before Thanksgiving and I found an Ipad Mini 2 that I didn't know he had, I was trying to unlock it and asking him if he could remember the unlock code but he can't remember it because hes older and his memory has started going but anyways I hooked it up to my laptop and attempted to do a factory reset on it but I can't do it, it says it cant contact the update server and I don't know what to do to factory reset it so I can then like.. restore from his cloud later and leave it unlocked without a passcode. Any ideas on what to do?

Sadly no, unless there’s a way to connect it without knowing the passcode, lol

Is the iPad connected to a WiFi network?

I was able to get it wiped and it’s connected to my wifi now but it says the iPad is linked to an Apple ID, any ideas on what to do next :/
