Have been holding on and on, continuing to use my iPad mini 2, while saving $$$ towards getting the mini 5. (Already know the mini 6, when it does come out, will be beyond my current budget.)

So..., finally saved enough and ordered the iPad mini 5 from the Apple.ca refurbished store, just the basic 64gb. Delivered today.

And WOW, such a huge difference the jump from 2 to 5 makes!! It's just so zippy! Everything is multiple times faster, from page turns in ebooks, to game moves, website responses. Just about every app I use responds just that much faster and sharper.

So, if anyone reading this has the iPad mini 2 and has been doing the i) waiting-for-gen-x thing and/or ii) refurbished-or-not thing..., my suggestion is go for it, on both counts.

My new iPad mini 5 isn't the first refurbished item I've bought from Apple. Have never been disappointed on that count.

Personal background: 70 years old, love gadgets, ebooks, soaking up news both foreign and domestic.... Alas, tiny budget.

My son was using a mini 2 and I upgraded him to the mini 5 last year. Totally agree. The jump in performance is huge. Plus the support of split screen view is nice. And the A12 inside is no slouch. Overall still a great value especially coming from mini 2. We’ll see how it plays out when the mini 6 launches, but IMO that will just lower the price of the mini 5 and it becomes and even greater value. \_(ツ)_/¯

Even the jump from mini 4 to 5 is massive... Mini 2 has A7, mini 4 has A8, mini 5, which came much later, has A12...
I have the 3 of them and mini 4 and 5 are miles apart...

Don’t forget the extra 1gb ram also makes a huge difference. ?

2 extra gigs of RAM actually (mini 2 has 1, mini 4 has 2, mini 5 has 3...)
The extra gig in the mini 5 doesn't make a difference compared to the mini 4 in terms of speed (only in terms of reloads), but it does make a difference in the mini 4 compared to the 2... it actually makes all the difference between the 2... since A7 and A8 are pretty close....
Still the mini 4 is pretty laggy nowadays on iPadOS 14, night and day compared to the mini 5....

My mom upgraded from the iPad Mini 1 to the Mini 5 in January.

Congratulations on your new device! iPad mini 5 is just the perfect size and has great performance! I also primarily use it for e-books and partly for YouTube. Maybe you can start gaming too, it's never too late to pick up a new hobby!

My personal compliment, you have great eye sight! I don't know if the mini would work for me. ?

A story of frugality with a happy ending. Even the iPad mini 4 was a huge jump over the iPad mini 2, and the iPad mini 5 seemed to bring it into closer step with the harder-hitting full-sized iPads.

It's looking like the platonic form of the current iPad Pro could be expanding to all Apple's displays this year; I can't doubt I'd be tempted by a new iPad mini with that form.

I’ve had the Mini 2, 4 and 5 and each was a pretty decent jump (2 to 4 may not seem like much going from A7 to A8, but double the ram made a massive difference, and the laminated screen and thinner body certainly didn’t hurt). Mini 5 was a huge performance jump from the Mini 4 so I bet going straight from the 2 to the 5 feels great ?

You had the same iPad minis as I did. Yes going from 4 to 5 was a huge jump for me as well.

Yup, I went from a Mini 2 to a Mini 5 earlier this year and was so pleasantly surprised by it how much faster it was.

Same here (defintely many people skipped the 3rd...) , I still own all of them. The mini 2 has still great battery life, it's on IOS 10 (for my old 32bit apps and games). The mini 4 battery is almost dead, it's lasts 20 minutes. Also, it's pretty laggy, I don't recall it being so laggy. Just for fun I took the 2 and the 4 and compared them. In the past the difference was huge, due to RAM, as you both said. Now? Not really... They were close... Most of the time the mini 4 won, but not by much and sometimes the mini 2 was even faster... So iPadOS, especially 14, has really killed the mini 4... The mini 5 is a joy to use, just as fast as my 11 pro....
Fiun fact during the test (5 minutes) the mini 2 lost 2%, the mini 4 lost over 20%....

My mini 5 has been good to me. I wonder how long to wait for the 6. I prefer the mini it is nice for nighttime reading in my bed. Full size is too heavy to leave it on my chest as I read with it. Maybe I will spring for it to be hooked up to my phone this time. Rather than just wi fi

Upgrading devices after a few years is always a much better experience.

6s to 11 was like, wow! and the 6s is no slouch.

Enjoy.
