Was working fine with previous version or two, but I just did an update to the latest iOS (or iPadOS?), and it won't shut off or boot. The display is the white Apple logo; when I try to hard boot with the switch, it briefly goes black and then returns with logo. Otherwise, nothing.

Tried holding Sleep/Wake/Power and Home buttons simultaneously, and get a display with message "support.apple.com/ipad/restore" and a diagram indicating that the Lightning cable should be plugged in. Apple's instructions are to Update or Restore the iPad by connecting to a Mac. Doing so, I'm prompted that I need iTunes 12.8 (I have 12.7), which is nowhere to to be found at the App Store.

I'm running 10.12 on the Mac and have been loathe to update because of the major file format changes since, but am I now forced to in order to get the iPad up and running?

Any suggestions?
