This is an area I struggle with. I'm an Apple only guy but have found that I prefer Kindle/Audible over iBooks. So a kindle would work for reading. I don't want to carry around multiple devices and for my reading usage the iPad works well. I do wish that I was disciplined enough to turn notifications off while I'm reading. I get distracted really easy. A dedicated reader would somewhat fix that for me.

The iPad Mini can compete with that one as I prefer the Apple ecosystem.

Kindle wins in bright sunlight outdoors, but the iPad mini wins in every other way. So much more versatile. Especially if this update gets Apple Pencil support.

If you’re just talking straight up reading books, (no magazines, web surfing, apps, multi media, etc) an e-ink device definitely beats an iPad. My iPad will never replace my dedicated e-ink eReader. It has exactly one function, for that it can’t be beat in my opinion.

Can't imagine using a bigger iPad until they support UI scaling. Using a big one feels like I'm using a kids/old folks device with massive icons.

One of the settings for Do Not Disturb is to keep it in effect even when the device is on and being used. I use this so I can mute all notifications when I'm trying to get actual work done.

With the new iOS 12 feature of long-pressing the do not disturb button in control center, you can even turn it on for an hour or so to make sure you don't forgot to disable it when you're done.

I don't want to carry around multiple deceives and for my reading usage the iPad works well.

Besides if I move to Kindle I would lose and have to repurchase the 100+ books I have purchased. I cant afford that!

It's a shame you didn't go the other way; given Amazon has a Kindle app on iOS, you can read all your Kindle books on an iPad. I read on Kindle using both my Oasis2 and my iPad Air 2. I prefer the former for longform, but the latter for magazines and anything with images.

There’s a subset of people that find every iPad besides the Mini to be too big , myself included. The Mini is a fantastic consumption device and Apple knows it, but their entire recent push with the iPad line has been away from consumption and trying to improve productivity. The Mini doesn’t fit this.

A laptop is still a better platform for most people's work. Apple needs to accept that the Mini still has a place in the lineup (as the consumer has shown with continued sales) and update the thing. They’re leaving money on the table by pushing productivity so hard.

Ipad mini 5 will have A9 chip
I think they've ended production now so I really can't see that... most likely A10, possibly A11 depending on how long they intend to leave it and whether that will prevent them ending A10 production next year after the iPhone 7, iPad 6 and ATV 4k ride off into the sunset.

An A10 with a better camera (even iPhone 6S quality would be a jump) with flash, the same screen, and a better cellular antenna would be all I'd need to find an upgrade worthwhile. I'm crossing my fingers.

A mini with an A11, 3 gigs of Ram and I'm all in, ready to order as soon as it's available... I've got a Mini 2, Mini 4, iPad 2, iPad Pro 10", iPad 6... 9/10 times... I grab the mini 4...

AND IF we can use the Pencil or Logitech Crayon on it... That will be ideal! I'd likely get rid of all my iPads (2, Pro and 6) and just go Mini...

I hope they release a new model for its vast improvements.

IF they do anything I wouldn't expect 'vast improvements'. it's more likely to be a mini iPad 2018 than a mini iPad Pro (ie basically the same as before but with just enough processor improvement to support the use of the Pencil). Probably won't even up the storage over 256GB if it even does that. might stay at 128GB

I’d think they’d use the 12 simply because of efficiency from bulk.

Ming-Chi Kuo said the mini5 will be a smaller version of the entry level iPad. So depending on its release(he said spring 2019), it will likely come with the A10 cpu/gpu, 2gb ram, non laminated screen, updated camera, Apple Pencil support and a reasonable price tag..

That would not be enough to make me upgrade my Mini4 (never use the camera & cannot ever see me using an Apple Pencil). All I would gain would be slightly extra weight & yes, a faster processor, but even that would still be a few generations ‘old’, whilst I would lose the laminated screen.

However, if this rumoured updated Mini will not be announced until Spring 2019, I suppose we could possibly see the entry level iPad being upgraded too, so maybe both the updated regular & Mini will launch at the same time, both with A11 & 3gb RAM - that would likely be enough to make me sacrifice the laminated screen

I guess it’s a possibility if they’re planning on forgetting about it for another 3+ years, with the A11 not having an X variant for iPad Pro that might be the chip they’d want to use for economy of scale though?

The only Kindle "advantage" is the bright sunlight reading.
IPad Beats it over anything else.
You can keep tons of books on the device or keep them in the Kindle app cloud.
Read PDFs
Web browsing
Shop
Buy
Draw
Word process, spreadsheets, presentations,
Garage Band
Take photos
Manipulate photos
Apps/directions/gps like capabilities

The iPad advantage list is endless.

No new Mini for you!

lol.. Good catch. I'm going to blame that on jet lag. San Francisco- Seoul to Manila and back... lol

That’s definitely a possibility. I’m sure they’ll model the new mini after the most recent release of the 9.7 iPad whether it is 2018 or 2019 model...

I think that the Kindle is a better device for reading books but I don't want to have two somewhat similar devices. I used the Nexus 7 and that was a better form factor for reading than the Mini as well but the Nexus 7 is an ancient, dead device and nobody makes 7-inch tablets because of the bigger phones. So the Mini is a compromise on just reading but it does a ton of other things that I need.
