Correct. This is the primary reason why Apple does not offer a smartcover for any iPad that has a camera bump. From my understand, the new case cover is quite mandatory for the new mini since you cannot put the ipad flat on desk due to the camera bump !
I assume the new cover acts as a shim to level everything flat.
Just be glad that it's just a first trimester bump.... not like the full-term bump on the iPhone 13.Such a weird decision to prioritize a camera lens on a tablet over enabling that tablet to rest flat on a hard surface. Do people really buy tablets for the rear-facing cameras?
I saw an iPhone 13 billboard when getting off the freeway today. The 50' wide sign really makes it apparent how enormous that camera bump is!Just be glad that it's just a first trimester bump.... not like the full-term bump on the iPhone 13. View attachment 1837683
The camera bump on the iPhone 13 is so pronounced that Apple tried to camouflage it by spreading the bump over 3 levels of protrusions.

Exactly. Just make the camera good with scanning documents.Such a weird decision to prioritize a camera lens on a tablet over enabling that tablet to rest flat on a hard surface. Do people really buy tablets for the rear-facing cameras?
Yeah and kills the whole point of having a small and light ipad with the mandatory cover. The prioritization I think was "Apple wants to sell cases and AirPods" -- thus we add a camera bump and nuke the headphone jack

It adds almost a 100 gramms, halving the weight difference to a 10.2 inch ipad while making it thicker. I had a such cover for my ipad, and absolutely hated it. It's totally idiotic to ruin a small device which meant to be used with a pencil in a way like this just to have a camera half the users will never use. It's an utter disappointment, but saved me 800 dollars. The Smart Folio cover is negligible on it.
Totally agreed. I have a mini 5 and iPP 12.9 2015 and am not upgrading until they broke because of the camera bump.It adds almost a 100 gramms, halving the weight difference to a 10.2 inch ipad while making it thicker. The first gen iPad Pros did not have a camera bump... it was completely flush.I always use a case with my Minis so it's not a problem for me, although Apple didn't get any money for a folio out of me despite trying to push it at the point of sale. The only iPad I've ever used without for a time was my iPad 3, because that was fairly heavy anyway. I can see why it would bother those who like to go caseless.
Doesn't the 1st Gen Pro have a camera bump? Or is it just the ring and that isn't as pronounced?
I don't think it looks as bad on the Mini as it did on the iPhone 6 et al... and I haven't bought an iPhone since.
You probably have your answer already but if you have the smart folio it does make everything flat. From my understand, the new case cover is quite mandatory for the new mini since you cannot put the ipad flat on desk due to the camera bump !
