I thought it would be good to have a separate thread for this. Covered in 9to5Mac today, assuming MacRumors will also cover it.

My two cents:

- The original also Mini 6 I received on launch day had this issue prominently, and I sent it back and managed to purchase again elsewhere.

- The second unit was much worse, not only with the ripples (with only light touch) but it also made an audible “popping“ and creaking sounds when the screen was interacted with. It was as though the screen had not been glued down properly. So I had to return it.

- I then managed to get a Mini from Amazon. This one doesn’t make any sounds when i interact with the display (thankfully) but has the same rippling issues with light touch as described in the article - mainly on the top half of the display in portrait. It’s not noticable when using a finger, but can be very noticable when any kind of pressure is applied with the Apple Pencil. I’m holding onto this one as I‘ve had enough playing the return lottery, I’ll wait and see what Apple do / say about this, if they do.

Also to be clear: all LCD displays can ripple when force is applied (including my 12.9 pro) but on the new mini it seems to do this in certain areas of the display when very minimal pressure is applied.

Here is the thread on this from Reddit:

The new one I got yesterday does it (together with a soft clicking noise on that part of the screen), doesn’t bother me in normal use and I only see it when looking for it. Won’t influence my decision about being able to live with the device or not.

So glad I went with the iPad 9th gen instead of the mini.

Aw great jelly and mine does that too :(

Discoloration at an offset spot from the pressure point and it does not even need that much pressure.

I wanted to live it but I think it is going back now. I am actually not sure that it did it at first but it does it after a week of use.

This is my worry, there is an issue I feel with how they’ve put this new Mini together and I think screen issues could potentially get worse over time.

I tried to reproduce this and was unable to. Still loving my Mini 6.
I can reproduce it by pressing very hard with the Apple Pencil in Dark Mode. There is no way that I would see this as a defect since it isn't normal use. If you get the problem with a light press with your finger, then it is a defect and the iPad should be returned and replaced.

That's what may/will cost to those users who said "well, it's good enough for now"..."I don't wanna bother a return"....

Sheer speculation, nothing more, nothing less. That’s the chance you take with anything. Only time will tell whether you are right or wrong.

Well there are manufacturing warranties that will help people if they find themselves in this situation. They can get their devices repaired or exchanged if needed.

The mini isn’t unique. A very small number of Apple products will have manufacturing defects. It’s the same with all new products released. However the majority of them are fine. The mini isn’t special. It won’t be recalled. The iPad Pro 12.9 didn’t get recalled over blooming. The iPhone 6 Plus didn’t get recalled over bending. The small minority of users that are experiencing issues will either return their devices within the 14 days or make use of their warranty.

It is quite simple. This is a budget device so Apple cheaped out alot of this device. Apple will probably consider this "working as intended".

Apple could have made a device without any of these issues, but then it would be more expensive most likely.
