Hello, I am looking at my partner's 1st gen. iPad Mini (A1432) to try to squeeze some remaining use out of it. It has iOS 9.3.5 installed and I understand that iOS 10 is not available for this model.

The WiFi has stopped and I don't know if it's possible to get it working, and if so, how. So the only way to communicate with it is via its USB cable, iTunes, etc.

We don't like to upgrade smartphones, computers, etc, unless necessary.

Is broken WiFi a known problem on unsupported 1st gen. iPad Mini's? If so, can I get it working again? Would jailbreaking open up this possibility? How about running a different OS? (Assuming a non-iOS operating system is supported on the A1432. I haven't checked yet.)

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I hate to say it but it sounds like after many years of reliable usage the wifi chip bit the dust. You could probably get it fixed through a third party willing to mess around with that kind of component but it would likely be cost prohibitive and at this point upgrading the device is likely the best option.

Perhaps get a refurbished device from Apple to get that new device feeling while not putting a massive toll on the environment.
