I'm a little surprised that iOS 12 made my mini more responsive. I'm one of the few that kept the mini because of the size. I haven't been able to use the iPad for a year or so due to it being a brick; non-responsive. Decided to update to the 12 and I'm liking it. Anyone else still have the mini?

Which model do you have? I have the Mini 4. It worked pretty well on iOS 11 with the animations turned off. I updated to iOS 12 day 1 and it works well too. I just now turned the animations back on, and they seem much smoother. Looks good.

I updated my mini 2 over the air as a test, the last few updates have made it slower, this has refreshed it, its like a new mini “iOS 12 is the iPad mini 5” maybe.

Mini 4. Updated from iOS 10 to iOS 12. It is noticeably faster. :D

(Skipped iOS 11 because I heard it was a pig, and also I had one 32-bit app left that I still wanted to use.)

I’ve tried 3 times to update my ipad mini 2 and it starts, but then says it couldn’t complete the update. I have a strong wifi signal in my house, so i dunno why it failed. Will keep trying.

I have an iPad mini 2 on the latest version of iOS10 (maybe 10.3.3 .. I think).

It's not the fastest, which is why I didn't put iOS11 on it. I'm wondering if anyone has recently gone from 10 to 12 on a mini 2 and what their experience is.

I know it'll be faster than 11, but is 12 faster than 10?

You won’t be sorry. Friend of mine has the Mini 2. He said it’s better than it has been in a long time.

Great thread. I have a Mini 4 I just bought(much to my pain as it's old). Anyway It came with iOS 11 and I had a tiny bit of buys remorse with the response on the device. I will try out iOS 12 and report back.

I have an iPad Mini 2 running iOS 9.3.5 which I would like to upgrade to iOS 12 so I'm sifting through everyone's posts to determine if I should stay on 9.3.5 or upgrade to 12.
I would be happy to post my experience going from 9 to 12 (which might provide everyone with a clearer picture on performance changes/differences) but I'm being cautious .... perhaps too cautious?

iOS 9.3.5 has always been a bit laggy on my Mini 2. I guess if iOS12 responsiveness is the same as 9.3.5 then that would be quite acceptable. I would be happy with that.
Should I take the plunge?

Just to update my experience ...

I updated from 10.3.3 to 12 and I don't regret a thing. Speed wise, it's about the same as 10. A few lags here or there, but nothing that wasn't there in 10.

Definitely worth the update. I have a mini 3 and went from ios 10 to 12. No regrets.

Okay I took the plunge. :D
Responsiveness is actually pretty good. Where it lagged for me in 9.3.5 it no longer lags.
However there are a couple of new places where the lag is now noticeable.
From the lock screen when you swipe to access the camera, that is really laggy. Swiping up to bring up the Passcode screen is a little slow.

From the Home screen when you swipe up to view running apps, that doesn't work too well. You have to swipe up rather slowly in order for the apps to appear. And you can't swipe down (I guess you would call it "peek view", as you can in iOS 11) to go back to the Home screen.
Edit: I figured out that this was due to "Reduce Motion" being on. Since switching it off it's much better. It's slightly different from iOS 11 but only because iOS 12 has changed the way this functions. So it works as expected, as it should. :)

Swiping through app screens, swiping down notifications etc are all quite responsive.
Force touch (??) functionality on the options in Control Center is a little slow.

I have iOS 11 running on my iPad Mini 4 and it works perfectly. I much prefer iOS 11 to iOS 12, especially where you swipe up to reveal running apps. It just works much better and smoother.

I checked all my photos, notes, apps, books, personal files in various apps and all were restored after the update without any issue.
So considering it wasn't a clean install, performance is quite acceptable.

So if anyone is still on iOS 9 or above on their iPad Mini 2 then I would recommend updating.
The new features are worth it.

I never found my iPad mini 4 to be particularly slow on iOS 11 but it’s noticeably faster and more responsive on iOS 12.

How come both my iPad Air and iPhone 5S is still SLOWER than my Sisters iPhone 6 at iOS 12? Even those three have 1GB of Ram? For me iOS 12 is only Slightly better than iOS 11 for A7 Devices. i hope iOS 13 make the A7 Device faster next year for optimization

I don’t think the A7 devices will be getting iOS 13. I think the iPhone 6 performs better because it has the A8 which is a newer chip.

Yikes! I need 10.3.3 or older to use my favourite games that were never updated to 64-bit so perhaps I need to find a secondhand mini 4 that was never updated to iOS 11 or 12. Would hate to buy a new mini 4 and find that wasn't an option.
