iPad mini sleeve/cover

I'm planning on getting the black/slate iPad mini. From what I've heard about the iPhone 5, the slate can tend to scratch easily. Is this true? And if so, what do you think is my best solution for protecting it while keeping it as minimalistic as possible? I want to get a smart cover so I just need something for the back.
