I received my new iPad mini 4 today and it seems that I cannot get the steps data.I have tried one pedometer app and Day One. Pedometer app gives step count zero and Day One tells me that I need an device with motion sensor.

Is that behaviour expected or is there something wrong with my iPad? I am running the latest public beta. Could that cause this problems?

I may be wrong but I don't think the iPad ever counted steps.

Yeah I mean we know Apple is all about cost cutting so I'm wondering why would they put the M8 if it's disabled in the iPads.

It's not just for counting steps.

When you’re in motion, the new M8 motion coprocessor continuously measures data from the accelerometer, compass, gyroscope, and a new barometer. This offloads work from the A8 chip for improved power efficiency. The motion coprocessor also continuously calibrates all five sensors, so when you want to play a game or use the Maps app, iPad mini 4 is ready and able.

They are probably counting on people who buy iPads also Gavin iPhones for that sort of thing. A bit douchy probably.

They can't just take out the M8 chip, it's part of the A8 SoC. Just like the M9 coprocessor in the A9X on the iPad Pro can't do the same "always on" Hey Siri as the iPhone.
