iPad mini1 homekit

So I have homekit running and all is good. My son never uses hist first gen mini anymore so I thought why not use it for a bedside alarm clock and controller for homekit in the bedroom. while settings in 9.3 allow it to act as a hub, I can't download the home app. anyone know if theres a workaround or a good app that can replace the home app?

right now I have a

lutron hub/switches
chamberlin bridge for my garage door.
