Hah. That's an old one! Seems vaguely familiar though. I didn't start lurking here until 2005 but I think someone may have posted this link before. I never thought it would be iPad because it sounded too much like a feminine hygiene product. Now we don't even think about the name. That's what happens when something is really great and successful and is essentially a generic term for all tablets now.

The iPad actually started off a number of years before the iPhone came out, but the iPhone came out of that project because they couldn't get it where they wanted it. It's hard to power a big display both in terms of the power requirements and the hardware needed back then while keeping it thin and light so you can kick back with it. But they probably had earlier prototypes in their lab that didn't use capacitive multitouch, which was a key technology. There were some really bad early tablets back then that were just running some Windows 2000/ME/XP variant.
