So I've been contemplating buying a Bluetooth GPS receiver for some time now, but was waiting for a decent smartphone to pair it with first, so I could use it for turn by turn navigation.

Now that I have my iPad I'm just curious how long you think it will be before an app is available that will allow me to do this? I mean it would only make sense that if you have a Bluetooth GPS receiver paired to the iPad that you should be able to get turn by turn directions. Is this something that might be worked into the native maps app, or perhaps a third party app like Garmin or Tom Tom? Or am I just missing something and is there already an app like this available?

What's everyone's opinion on this?

Very interesting, my cousin has a bluetooth gps, I will try it on mine and see if I get a gps signal on my ipad, I have been using my phone with wifi thetering and internet works and google maps load perfectly but the GPS location feature doesnt work, I want to integrate my ipad to my dash but without GPS will suck,

No gps in wifi version. Only 3G version has gps

You obviously have the wifi version which does not have gps. The 3G version will have gps so that one could potentially do navigation.

And you obviously aren't paying attention.

The whole point is whether or not the iPad will work with an external Bluetooth GPS receiver. Just because the GPS isn't built in doesn't mean navigation is impossible.

There are a couple dock connecting gps units that were designed for the ipod touch that should work fine with the iPad.

It would take some work to get it to fit properly and at $200 I see no reason in ever doing this instead of buying the 3G with GPS built in... But if this is possible I don't see why a bluetooth version would not be.
