iPad NEEDS OS X Leopard to sync with Mac's

I'm not sure if this is also the case with the iPhone as I am running Snow Leopard but thought I would just point out that you need to be running Mac OS X 10.5.8 at least to be able to sync your iTunes media to Apple's forthcoming iPad tablet.

Good strategy to get anyone still running Tiger to upgrade to Snow Leapard I think. But I'm just a teenager and I know nothing about business but that's what it looks like to me. Hope this enlightens you as you consider taking the plunge to invest in an iPad, I know I will, just as soon as it is available to us British folk.

Tiger is almost two and a half years out of production anyway, and Apple doesn't really hang on to old systems.

anyway why would they want windows people to upgrade thus loosing sales from people who dont want to and lose sales. plus snow leopard is only 30 bucks!

The switch to x86 CPUs was in 2006.
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) was released in 2005.

What happened in 2004 and 2006?

That was a lot of proof reading.

I think they support a Windows version from 2004 because many Windows user still use that version, and it would be unwise to not support it, a big chunk of customers would be angry.

And Windows XP SP 2 is not as different from Windows 6 and 6.1 as Mac OS X 10.4.11 is different from Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6.

Apple puts lots of exciting new APIs in each release of Mac OS X. There's no point putting them in if they don't get used and the minute you use a new feature you're incompatible with a previous version of the OS. Writing backward compatible software for Macs is difficult because you have a menu of nice new APIs you could use that would make life a lot easier ... but you can't.

As they have the ultimate choice and they're not beholden to the consumer, it's not surprising they did this.

I"m currently running Tiger on my MBP.

What i plan on syncing from the computer to the iPad can be from any other computer i think though, so i could just use the kids mini.

I own Leopard/Snow Leopard to upgrade - i just don't have time nor mental energy to do it. I"m also facing a send my computer off for repair issue and not excited about putting effort into it and having it trashed by them.....

I just had a weekend free up in 2 weeks - maybe i'll schedule it in there?!

You'll notice that it reads: "with Service Pack 3 or later". Windows XP has been out for almost 10 years, but Service Pack 3 was released in April of 2008 so they're only supporting it from 2 years ago.

Mac OS X has changed substantially in the last few years with Snow Leopard being a ground up rewrite. I hope Apple rewrites iTunes taking advantage of every API available to make it faster and better.

Don't forget that most Tiger users can upgrade to Leopard. It also supports a significant amount of PPC users. The world has moved on from Tiger and it won't be missed.

XP is still the most popular windows OS so of course it is going to be supported.

What I am grumpy about is that there is no iPhone SDK for windows at all. If you want program for iPhone/iPad you need to buy a Mac. That is a major iPad downside for me.
