ipad not showing up in itunes/imac

I just purchased a new imac last night, and today i just hooked up the ipad. But itunes isn't showing the ipad, and neither is the finder...

What is that I'm doing wrong? The iPad is charging with the imac, but not actually finding it...

The same thing happened to me on my Mac Pro. Just reinstall iTunes and it will read your iPad. I don't know why this happens though.... But whatever!

Had same experience with my iPad out of box, also it wasn't recognized by included adapter. Hour plus on phone with myApple was no joy, tried all the hold power and home etc. End result was visit to Apple store this past Sunday and walking out with new. Maybe since it's charging, yours not defective.
