iPad on vacation + other questions

Well, iPad will be launched here just before i go on a 2 x 19 hour bus trip + some boring nights at the hotel. I was wondering if the 16GB version would be okay for this? Also, I was wondering if you can put movies on it which you haven't bought in the iTunes store, same goes for music. The thing is I can get enough money for the 16GB wifi + case etc, but 32GB is going to be harder, even though prices are not yet announced. In the hotel we got Wi-Fi, so I'm wondering about the bus trips mostly. I'm going to Venice, can it hold it out in my backpack in May (turned off). I hope for some anwers, iPad seems a great device for this, but there are some questions ^^^^

Yes, you can put videos, music and e-books which you did not buy through itunes on your iPad as long as they are in format which itunes understands (can always convert if it does not).

As for 16GB vs 32GB - average movie takes about 1.2GB - do calculations yourself and see how many movies you want to load.

It's compact enough so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use it on a bus trip... Only you know which iPad version will best suit your needs.. I opted for the wi-fi only because if I need to use my iPad and there's no wi-fi available I can use tethering as a last resort so I couldn't justify spending the extra money on the 3G..

Yes, you can sync movies/music not purchased through iTunes on it
 
I don't mean to sound all "parental" but what part of an Italian bus ride is "boring"? Take it all in... The sights, the sounds, the smells... There will be plenty of time for the iPad later. What's the point of travel if you spend your time watching some movie you could have watched at home? I love the iPad, but unless you're on a business trip, or have been to Italy a zillion times, or are Italian... And it's no big deal, I'd leave the iPad at home. Well, maybe I could see using it to keep a journal, or buy some books on Italy (guide books, etc.).. Anyway, to each their own I suppose.
 
^^^^ Well, you're right, but I can't keep my eyes on the windows 19 hours neither can I on my iPad so I thought I'd switch, Italy may be beautiful, but that's only what, 4 hours of the ride. We'll probably pass through Germany, which I see every 6 weeks. (Not trying to sound negative). So I though it wouldn't be wrong watching a vid inbetween. I am not buying it only for this trip BTW.
 
Be aware of hotels without WiFi

As others already pointed out in other threads, iPad owners have a problem with many hotels providing wired broadband rather than WiFi. You might want to check your hotels. Some suggested taking wireless router on trips (which I personally think is a stupid idea).
 
The file size of a ripped DVD depends of the resolution that you choose during ripping. The most common free app to use is Handbrake. While, the resolution for the iPad is 1024x768, the resolution of a standard DVD movie is only 720x480. You don't want to rip your movie with resolution any larger than that of the source. Download Handbrake and rip a movie under to few different setting to see how the quality and file size changes. You could sacrifice the resolution/quality a bit to decrease the file size, in order to fit more files.
 
Yes, I'm sure they got wi-fi, it's stated on their website. I'll rethink if I will take the iPad with me, because if not I'll buy the 32GB after it.
Well, it says; WI.FI ZONE FREE, whether it's a bad translation or they mean it's free of wifi ( none ) i'm not sure. It's a great device for on the couch without taking the laptop firing up you lap. I also heard something about the 32GB going with a free case? Now I will just wait and see the prices here in the EU.

Many hotels have wired broadband in the rooms and WiFi in the lobby - this is mostly from US experience though. I guess, in Europe many hotels did not have wired broadband in a first place.
 
Since there is no USB port on iPad how can I transfer files from an iMac to an iPad

Put them in your iTunes libary I guess?

The OP is right. You add the files to the iTunes library, and then sync with your iPad.
