My wife is a happy iMac user. She would like to be more mobile, mostly for email, videos, music and general internet surfing.

I struggle with enabling her with a new Macbook or with an iPad. What are your thoughts?

My son so want his mothers hand-me-down iMac if we go the Mabook route.

Sounds like a Macbook may be the bet bet if you're going to pass the current Mac down to your kid... kind of a 2 birds, 1 stone deal.

I'd think about an iPad later down the road.

You have to "enable" her? If that is the case, go iPad, because it sounds like she is not capable of using a new Macbook.

How about you"enable" her to make the decision and buy it herself?

Not helpful. You assume too much and have interpreted my query incorrectly. I don't know what your situation is, but my wife and I make these decisions jointly. If you take exception to my wording, then too bad, I don't care

She'd probably enjoy an iPad more. As far as the online videos go, most of the major sites are adding iPad compatibility or have already done it. Hulu is already said to be working on it. Netflix just released their streaming app for the iPad.

She won't enjoy it if she can't do the things she wants to do.

Most is not defined as two. So most have not added the video support yet, and any reports are still vaporware.

OP, ask your wife what she needs the device to do and base it on hard evidence of app development, not internet speculation.

You can always buy a cheap used MacBook, which will be plenty fast for basic internet stuff, and when the iPad finally does the things she want sell it for what you paid.

I would make a list of what she needs/wants to do with it, then do the old list the pros and cons of each to see what she needs. Also is it something where she could still use the iMac when needed? That should be considered in there as well.

Get a Macbook and give your son the iMac. The iPad will not replace a computer, so she'll need to keep both otherwise.

"Enable" your wife with a trip to your nearest Apple Store next week. Then let her play for an hour with an iPad and a MacBook. Then "enable" her to come to a decision based on her own experience.

That's the best advice. I'll bet you end up with an iPad though. Maybe both! :)
