My 2018 iPad Pro 11 is refusing to detect any any external drive. I've tried at least 3 of them using the Apple USB-C adaptor as well as a third party one. All of this works on my MacBook, but the iPad is not detecting anything. None of these drives require external power.

From what I've seen, some drives do require the adapter you're using to be plugged into the wall to power up the drives. With the adapter I have, even with power, it's saying the device requires too much power.

What file system is set up on these storage devices?
That's what the issue was. They were either APFS encrypted or NTFS. Leave it to Apple to not support their own file system and the most popular file system in the world.

It's a real shame they don't support encrypted drives. I've been using encrypted drives for a while now for work and particularly whilst traveling, knowing all my drives are encrypted gives great peice of mind. Maybe soon...
