iPad Photo/Wallpaper Size?

Can anyone tell me the correct format (ex. 1024 x 1024) for a photo to be so that it doesnt stretch or pixel'd when turning the iPad.

As well as a program that does it for free? Thanks! :D
 
Because the screen rotates, 1024x1024 pixel wallpapers will allow the wallpaper to fill the screen in both directions.

Don't know of any programs that specifically edit for iPad, but Picasas will as well as Preview in OS-X.

Crop to a square then export with pixel size of 1024x1024
