Hi, I intended to buy the iPad Air 3 last week but saw a good deal on a brand new iPad Pro 10.5 which I ended up purchasing. The next day I came across a thread on the 'white spot' issue. Now I am thinking should i return the pro within the 30 days I have and purchase the Air 3 or just keep it and hope that I don't get the white spot issue. I know it's an older processor but I really like the quad speakers and the display looks great and it's smooth and fast. I read a lot of comparisons between the two tablets. I don't normally buy older tech but I thought it would still be able to take IOS udpates for a few more years to come. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Personally I'd go Air 3. You'll avoid the white spot issue, which some have had replaced easily, others have been seemingly abandoned by Apple support over it. A lot of iPad Pro owners say ProMotion isn't actually as useful or as essential as the first time seeing it magically work would suggest too. The quad-speakers would be great I know, but at the same time real quality listening uses headphones or Bluetooth speaker so you can still enjoy superior audio on the other devices this way if you like. The other advantage is the Pro 10.5 has 1GB more RAM I believe.

The iPad Pro will be supported for another 2 years or so yet easily, maybe more. But however long it lasts, the iPad Air 3 will last a year, maybe two longer for OS updates. Extra RAM won't cause it to be supported longer, it'll only make it easier to have a lot of tasks in the background with less refreshes, but the Air 3 is by no means poor in this regard.

Plus, if you or anyone you know is a student you can until tomorrow in the UK anyway get free Beats with a new Air 3 from Apple - and then sell them for a tidy discount! I did.

Great advice. Thank you very much. I think I will return. As you say, speakers and pro motion and 1gb ram not really a reason to keep it when white spot could pop up at anytime 😀

I went and made the other bet. The air lacks so many features compared to the older pro that it’s simply not funny.

I’ll gamble on the white spot, only seen them on these boards and never in the wild. I’m also willing to bet that the pro will either get as many iOS updates or more. The last cut-off was solely based on how much RAM a device had and the A10X is no slouch in other regards either.

Yeah, even with some of the great benefits of that 10.5 Pro they'd all be in vain if you got to 13 months and it was out of warranty and uneconomical to repair.. Some people on here claim it happened just out of warranty too, and that Apple would only offer to fix it for nearly the price of a new Pro 10.5...

I do agree with this too, I'm yet to see an image of the white spot issue. And these forums are known for their negativity towards Apple products (ironically). But still, I wouldn't and didn't take the risk. I went Air 3

The white spot will affect your iPad. It happens to pretty much all Pro 10.5s.

But it doesn't matter. Because:

1. It doesn't affect the experience.

2. Buy AC+ and renew it forever. It is no longer limited to 24 months. Apple will keep changing you Pro.

I purchased my 10.5 shortly after it was released and whilst the battery is getting tired, and they keyboard is looking a bit worn, I have no “white spot”.

Since I paid £30 less than the Air 3 and have extras on the Pro that the Air doesn’t have, I’m going to take a gamble and keep it. I appreciate all of your advice. I might be lucky and avoid the white spot. I think if I return and get Air 3 ultimately I will regret it. I have 12 months guarantee and 60 days to take out AC if I need to.

The speakers on the Pro are really nice. Once you get used to the "big" sound, it is very annoying to only hear out of one side of an iPad.

I've owned three of the 10.5 Pros (well, wife has one of them), and have not experienced the white spot.

Good call and in many cases you will be able to use consumer law to your advantage as well, especially in the UK and EU.

I see you’re spreading your nonsense again. It does not happen to all Pro 10.5 and you have zero proof of this statement, yet one can look around this forum and find a multitude of people saying they have not had a white spot problem. So how does it happen to all of them yet it also obviously does not?

Go ahead, I’m waiting for whatever ridiculousness you can think up. You tin foil hat is on way too tight.

Well the Air 3 is also starting to show up with the bright spot for some users it doesn't seem like Apple truly changed the manufacturing process for it. The issue is not with the display itself but the connectors underneath causing pressure in mostly the same spot for people.

The speakers are good but not that amazing as everyone makes them out to be IMO.

Agreed. I get no noticeable sound until I’m almost at three quarters in volume then they get really loud but hardly any sound up until then.

I think you’ll be fine. I had my 10.5 Pro for over a year and never saw a white spot. Still nothing before I sold it.

One disadvantage of the Air 3 is that the camera connection kit can't power attached storage - only works with the Pro's. You'd have to use a powered USB connected to the connection kit.

For what it's worth, I've had the 10.5 Pro for 2 years and don't have any white spots.

I've had my 10.5 pro for a year and there is no white spot. It's used for several hours daily.

That's 6 10.5 Pros just on this page alone with no white spot, yet some will still preach that 100% get them. ;)
