I have been looking for an answer to this questions for a while now online and when you use Google, you get a bunch of search results, but all of them are related to some other topics and not exactly my question.

I would like to buy an iPad Pro 10.5" and I will be playing a lot of videos both on YouTube and also from the local drive. On YouTube, I cannot get a confirmation of what the maximum resolution the iPad will play.

I definitely want to have something higher than 1080p, however the resolution of the screen is not as big as the 1440p resolution, so I am not sure whether it will only be 1080p or somehow something in between.

I went to the local Apple Store this afternoon, and asked this question to the staff, however they did not know the answer.

They checked the Youtube app on an iPhone 7+ and in the playback setting you could see the 1440p option available. I found that a bit strange as the screen resolution of the iPhone 7+ should be 1080p only. Maybe there is a logic somewhere in there, but I just don't know.

Would really appreciate, if someone could shed some light on this.

Thank you.

Can Confirm, iPad pro 10.5 has a 1440 option for YouTube Playback, in the native Youtube app.

Mine has 1440p available but always defaults to 720p on auto

videos at 1440p plays smoothly and looks great. Stats for nerds show H264@1440p at 2560 by 1440. Have no way to verify those numbers. Haven't seen 2160 as an option.
