I have an old Asus LTE tablet that I need to replace soon (no longer updated by them from 1 year ago - but only 3 years old). I love how Apple updates their device so much longer than Android. I have been an Android user way longer than Apple.

So I currently have 2 12.9" ( 2015 & 2018). I don't think I would be happy with just a basic iPad since I heavily use my 2 pros. I also have a new Mac mini and an iPad Air 2 that is useless since it only has 16 gb. I won't necessarily use the LTE one heavily, but I might be surprised. Currently, I am taking all 3 tablets upstairs at night - gets awfully heavy in my bag.

I would be using the LTE one for when I am out and about - ie like the 2 trips to ER I made this week with a child (not usual occurrence). Maybe take it to church, a Bible Study and other uses. I like that I could somewhat (tight fit) put it in my purse. My daughter 11y would probably use it for Netflix when we are clothes shopping etc and possibly my 5y granddaughter for same. But latter would be very supervised. SO I guess I would need a good case.

10.5 with 512 gb for $480. or 11 with 256 for $900. If I look at price alone.... But I am also looking at longevity. This one won't be my heavy duty use tablet - but would want to be able to use Affinity Photo, maybe light PS use (if it ever comes out LOL). I probably would use Procreate etc on it as well, when I am upstairs or out an about. I may try reading on it with Kindle app (which I currently use my iPhone Max).

So what do you all suggest for an LTE version?

If you have unlimited money then 11 otherwise 10.5.

You’ll be able to sell your 10.5 after 2-3 years for maybe 200-250 or so.

After 2-3 years you’ll be able to sell the 11 for an additional 100-150 tops.

Regardless, you’ll upgrade max by 2020/2021 when 5G comes.

And chances are in 2-3 years what’s available for 500-700 will beat both existing options.

It’s better to spend 450 every 2 years than 900 every 3 years.

thank you - I was not thinking about 5G. SO will 4G no longer work then? Verizon is doing 5G now in select areas. We live in small rural town in Iowa - so it might take awhile before we get 5G. But still that is a good thing to consider.

You’ll still want it by 21/22. So it would be good to buy it by then.

Yep. Sounds about right.

First year depreciation is the worst. Prior to the Air, iPads didn't really get discounted by retailers so the loss isn't that bad (albeit you'd be lucky to recover 50 cents on the dollar for storage and cellular upgrades). Nowadays, clearance deals really drive down used prices.

If this is going to be an accessory device, not a main-use iPad (since you said you already have a 12.9” Pro), I’d go with the 11” model. 256GB is plenty for an occasional take-it-with-you iPad.
Unless you need to keep tons of media with you, 512GB seems like overkill for a second (or third) iPad.

Get the 11 inch model.

now I am really at a standstill. Will 5G make the 4G technology obsolete? I saw that 5G will be in Iowa this year, we are not far from Des Moines. So that is a lot sooner than I thought. I know that we will probably get 5g for our house internet. We have 1 gig internet service with Mediacom which averages between 250-300. But 4G in our house is about 25.

so I don't want to spend a lot on an LTE device & not be able to use it by the end of the year?

The thing is, 5G even if it is available for you, won’t be cheap at the start. I also doubt that ISP will sell you 20+GB data for a low low $15/mo under 5G. And 4G, even 3G, won’t go away just because 5G is available, unless that network is operated by Apple, which will more than likely “discontinue 4G service In favor of better 5G network” (joking).

You don't want to even think about how much we are paying for phones & home internet... NOT Cheap. But we do have 10 people in our household. My parents live with us. At one point we had talked about getting all of us LTE tablets & getting rid of Mediacom. But 250-300 download speeds is better than 25. Also, upload speeds are pretty slow on LTE. We do have unlimited data on ALL our lines, but we don't abuse it.

In the US, 5G is being rolled out to alleviate congestion on 4G LTE. Devices that support 5G in a location that has it will just connect to the 5G network under existing plans. No extra payment required.

Most carriers have switched their postpaid plans to unlimited (throttled after a certain point) that cost around $50-60 per line per month on family plans.

Before looking into this - I really did not know a whole lot about 5G.... Just knew it was coming and it would be faster.... Now I have done a bit of research about it myself - and I do agree 4G will be around for awhile.

SO another issue that came up is about the LTE versions themselves.... 10.5 is LTE Advanced (up to 450 Mbps) and 11 is LTE Gig.

Another thing - is I use GoodNotes 5 on my 2015 IPP. I use it as a digital journal, heavy in graphics from page to page. I noticed that I will get a blank screen every once in awhile and I have to wait a bit for it to load. I was thinking it was GoodNotes. A bit ago, I opened it on my 2018 iPP and it works fine. I use this app daily for this. I have it open all the time on my 2015 while doing email, graphic design in Affinity Photo etc on my 2018.

So I know that the 10.5 will be in between the 2 in speed etc. I wish I could play with one - with the apps I would be using. I see that Verizon charges a $35 restocking fee, but I could try it for 14 days.

Get the wifi version from Apple and test and return if you like. There’s no restocking fee.

I see this behaviour in GoodNotes 5 on my iPad Pro as well (first gen 12.9).

I don’t think I necessarily believe this. The iPad Air 3 came out in that 2 years time frame after the iPad Pro 2nd gen and it isn’t better.

The iPad Air 3 is over 2 years newer then the iPad Pro 2nd gen. It is equipped much worse, and only $150 less expensive MSRP, less features, less memory.. 60hz, 2 speakers?

So in 2-3 years why would apple release something better than the 11” for less money than it?

You are way off.

Sorry. Dude, I am not mistaken.

Pro and Air aren't competitors.

When the Gen 5 Pro comes out, you'll find Gen 4 (a few months after Gen 5 release) for USD 500-700 or so for a decent 256 GB cellular model. Maybe in 21/22. That Gen 4 would blow away the current Gen 3 and then he can again upgrade from the Gen 4 after another 2-3 years to Gen 5 or Gen 6.

Thats also if you don't want top of the line new LOL But since I do have Gen 1 & Gen 3, maybe I should add a 2. But@BB I can save $200 on a 11

So I just played with my daughter's 2018 ipad, since it has a pencil & would be closer. Boy is it small compared to the 12.9. I remember why i upgraded to the 12.9 when i bought my 2015.

I know that the sizes are 9.7, 10.5, & 11. I have been watching some videos on it as well.

So if someone buys a $750 iPad Pro 11” at launch which would be November of 2018. And they own it for 3 years.. well at the end of this 3 years it would be November 2021, which should be around the time frame when the 5th gen iPad pros are rolling around. So we can buy a 4th gen iPad Pro used for maybe $500.

If you read all of that. Then that is incredible!

It is absolutely incredible that you can buy something for $750, and own it for 3 years, for something better to still cost $500.

Oh and you said a few months after the gen 5 releases, we can get a deal on a gen 4. So if the gen 5 launches in November of 2021. Then We would have to wait until early 2022.

It all sounds like money well spent to me.

So in 2022 we can buy a better iPad Pro for $500 bucks than our old iPad Pro 3rd gens.

2022 is a ways off.
