I own the iPad Pro 10.5 (2017) from the first day. Now I want to upgrade to 12.9 but in Europe the M2s (and all new Apple products in general) have a generous price increase.

I can find the 12.9 M2 at 1569€ and M1 at 1150€. It is a huge price difference to have only better cpu…

I’m wondering.. if purchasing the M1 it will be future proof for another 5-6 years considering that the main use is media consumption and basic video editing for my drone and my GoPro.

Your thoughts?

At that big a price difference, I would choose the M1. Performance difference between M1 and M2 isn't much and RAM is the same anyway.

I dunno how important ProRes support will be for you though since you're doing video editing.

I have the M1 12.9 and have expectations that it has many good years ahead of it. For the tasks you mentioned, it works great (I use LumaFusion for video editing and the M1 handles it well).

Edit: I went 10.5 -> 2018 12.9 -> M1 12.9. I'll never go back to a smaller tablet than the 12.9 (excluding the portable 5G Mini 6 I also have).

An M1 will serve you fine for years to come. As a 10.5 owner myself, I may do the same thing.

They said basic video editing - I'm sure any performance difference won't be too painful.

I'd say go M1, OP. Save the cash.

Absolutely. I agree with everyone here that the M1 represents better value here.

The combination of prices spiking in Europe and iPadOS remaining pretty limited makes it really hard to justify these £/€1500-2000 iPads.

I am replacing the 10.5” IPPwith the M2 12.9”. However, I live in the U.S., i.e. less dramatic price increases.

Go with the M1 12"9! I went to a local Best Buy this morning, and they matched the $200 off on Amazon! 128GB for $899!

With Apple selling refurbished for $889, that’s also been on my radar, especially since I have a mini 6 for handheld use. I still need something to use with a keyboard on the table, so been looking at 12.9” again. I’m leaning toward just using the 10.5” another year or so, but can’t stop looking.
