I wanted to reach out to any other 2017 10.5” iPad Pro owners to see if they have experienced this as well. I’ve noticed for a bit now that my iPad would occasionally not register touch inputs, but it wasn’t too bad and I blamed it on software. Lately, however, it’s gotten considerably worse. I sometimes have to swipe over and over again in Safari before it scrolls, some buttons can take several taps to register, etc.

I’ve soft restarted the device and am on the latest iPadOS 14.3 version. It happens mostly in Safari, it occasionally in third party apps as well and I’m starting to suspect a hardware issue - not that I can do anything about that at this point.

I have the same iPad Pro as you have but have not noticed any less response to my touch inputs or swipes.

I should state though that I don't use it very much and only keep it as a backup in case my Mac or ISP goes down.

If you have/had it plugged into power, that’s the issue. Turn off, unplug power, turn it back on. Should be fine.

Apple dorked something up a few releases back.

I did try and restart it separate from the power supply, but I can try again. I would prefer it to be software, but it seems like a hardware issue to me.

Are you using a screen protector?

No, I am not.

This is an issue that some of us have experienced with ipads with screens larger than 9.7" for me, it was a 12.9 Pro. It doesn't appear to be software but hardware. Although Apple refuses to acknowledge the problem, Best Buy looks for this issue when people trade in their ipads.

Seems to be larger than 10.2, not 9.7.

Hrm. One reason I feel like it's not software is that it has slowly gotten worse, even between updates and usually I feel like software isn't a gradual decline - it's either corrupt or functioning (mostly). I'd say I've had this issue for about six months, but today for some reason it spiked really bad for an hour or so where Safari was unusable and even trying to type in spotlight just wasn't registering.

At the moment it's fine, but it's disappointing.

That definitely doesn't sound like normal. I'd bring it into the genius bar, especially if it's not a year old you should be under warranty

You keep saying it’s hardware but then specifically stating it’s only mainly in safari. That sounds like a software issue, or it would be across everything you do. It’s more likely a sporadic ios 14 bug no?

I've had this issue intermittently but it was very brief and mild and I still think it's software. The reason for that is it happens almost exclusively in one app at specific moments, and that's the Reminders app when I switch to it from the app switcher on the magic keyboard. It doesn't happen elsewhere other than Safari, but very rarely and for very brief moments and this seems to be limited to certain websites.

I may be wrong about it being software, but if it's hardware then it's quite a coincidence that it always seems to happen in the same places.

For reference, I've been using my iPad since July 2019. I wish you luck, hopefully it's software that can be fixed with an OS reinstall or a restore to factory settings.

Yeah I was having similar issues. It was the screen, not iOS. Screen was replaced by a 3rd party & its back to working properly.

I definitely get the unresponsive screen on my 10.5 pro, but I think it's a software optimization issue. Only happens when there’s multitasking, particularly with the youtube app. But even the cursor gets sticky sometimes when I use the apple trackpad

Unfortunately I just had the issue in the Reddit app and in Settings. It’s getting worse even in between updates so I’m not sure it’s entirely software. It’s upsetting because it is starting to really inhibit the user experience.

By software I was mainly referring to ipados, becuase if it was a hardware issue then it’s likely not going to just be applying to certain apps. If the touch screen is somehow broken, you would see it across all usage, not select software.

I tried the unplug method! I have the old iPad on the charger all the time. After plug it in again no more issues with the touch! The Explanation could be, that over time a kind of static charge is building up inside the sensor. Unplugging it and touching it will move that static current down thru your body into the earth. Be barefoot!

I have the second generation 11 inch iPad Pro and I have noticed the same thing, mainly when it is sitting in the magic keyboard and my partners 10.5 inch seems also to have difficulty.

10.5 here as well. Sometime during a 14.X update this problem started for me. It was immediately after the update that I started experiencing response lags. It almost seems like iPadOS hits an internal cycle ( network?) and stops responding.
