I started finding intermittent touch issues that have been random on my less than a year old iPad Pro 10.5. This started happening around February or March. I think it was after 14.4 got released.
I've read that this is a known issue with some 10.5's. Disconnecting the Apple Pencil helps and makes it rarely happen at all.

Anyone else having this issue after 14.4? I hope it's a software issue.

I have tried the following:
  • Turn off and on
  • Hard restart
  • Reset all settings
  • Clean the screen frequently
  • Turning off Bluetooth
  • Turning off Background App Refresh
  • Turning on Touch Accommodations
  • Turning off Screen time, which made the issue occur less
  • Disconnecting Apple Pencil, which also helped

iPad Pro 10.5, manufactured April 2020. Got it in June 2020 as a replacement for a faulty device.
iPad OS 14.5.1

I would honestly just sell it and buy a new iPad.

No issues of this kind on mine on 14.5, but the white spot....
I am not selling it because nobody wants it with the white spots, and I am not selling a 256GB cellular pro which is still very fast for under $200. I'd rather use it every now and then...

This is the problem I’ve had for a long time, very frustrating. The worst ApPiE experience I’ve ever had. One time replacement last summer for the white spot, since APPLE doesn’t acknowledge the touch issue, and that helped a short time, started up again, and then an update seemed to help, for a short time, now back on and off. Maybe a hardware problem? As I’ve tried everything. One suggestion was to hold only at the edge, and that sometimes helps, sometimes. Anyway… get rid of this, trading in (can’t just sell it) for a new 2021 while I can.

Sorry to hear that I honestly would just sell it and move on. BTW when doing these updates do you have the device plugged in or have over 50% battery life? Maybe take it to a third party apple repair store to see what can be done?

I believe the updates will not even run unless there is 50% battery and/or external power. There have been so many - hundreds? - of suggestions about the iPP 10.5 touch problem with no real fix. Along with the well documented ‘white spot,’ this is one of APPLE’s true lemons in my book (Along with my two MBP 17”ers and their ‘too hot to handle’ defective graphic cards!). Of course, some are lucky, and some are not (twice!, on my second 10.5) and without Apple giving me any real long term solution it is time to part ways with this device.

I am on a 2017 iPad Pro 12.9" and those touch issues are driving me insane. It started after roughly a year, I even had to send it to Apple where they detected no issues and got it back. Still going mad.

I just wonder how wide-spread this issue is, because I definitely will not spend those crazy prices for a new one just to find myself in the same spot some time later.

Typing on the screen is ridiculous because there is always some touch that is eing ignored. Like this.?

I wonder if this is because it's a first gen pro motion device and they didn't anticipate the power it needed from the A10X.

My problem with this seems to go away when I remove the case with the built-in screen protector.

Let's do a survey on this topic!

Here's a Twitter survey:
This is interesting. The general impression I get from users that have not had this touch response problem is that I must be crazy (or just unlucky) but 20+% are having some issue, and that's not a small problem. APPLE does not acknowledge any problem, but 20%, come on. No solution, I've tried everything, maybe software, probably hardware. I imagine the 10.5 white-spot issue would get a similar percentage you can actual see [and sometime both like in my case, so overlapping], a fairly high rate of device problems. Time to just stop the frustration, it's not going to fix itself, and so move on. No need to ditch the 10.5 IF everything was working as it should, but I have a new 11” M1 using here, and so far am happy with the experience.

This if the first thing we did when I took it into APPLE, no screen protector, but ditched the back plastic case. Didn't help. Replaced 10.5 worked for awhile, then touch problem started again on that unit, but no white spot again, yet.

Yeah, this started happening to mine too a few weeks ago. I think it is a software glitch since my 10.5” iPad Pro is over 2 years old and never had that problem prior to March/April.

I ended up upgrading to the new 11“ iPad Pro with M1 chip so I’m not too worried about it anymore. No touch glitches on this model. Otherwise, I’ve loved the 10.5” iPad Pro. My new 11” iPad isn’t really noticeably faster in normal usage.

20% of 22 votes, self-selective for a device that likely sold in the millions. Honestly, I don’t think we can draw general conclusions from that.

With that said, all that really matters is if it’s giving you problems.
